As part of the club’s open singles competition, which will be held on Saturday and Monday (entry fee is E20 for visitors, E5 for members) participants wearing a green garment will receive a voucher to play during the month of April in our weekly open singles competitions.

The competitions begin on Thursday, April 4 and continue every Thursday until the end of September.

CRUMLIN - The annual Rumble for Crumlin, a fund-raising event for Crumlin Children’s Hospital, will be held this week. The 18-hole three-person rumble runs through the whole week.

Members are invited to play as many times as they wish during the week, with the rumble continuing into next weekend’s competition. Winners will go through to a regional qualifier at a later date.

The rules are: one score to count on holes one to six, two scores on holes seven to 12 and three scores on the remaining six holes.

SPRING - The latest round of the Spring Series saw new club member Paddy McGuinness (10) taking the leading qualifier spot with 37 points from John Skehan (17) and Danny Joyce (13).

The last qualifying round will be held tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday, with the final to be played on March 22.

FOURBALL - Age won out over experience in Sunday’s open fourball, with young guns Oisin Dunne (14) and his brother Fearghal (18, Abbeyleix GC) taking victory with 44pts from club members Matty Byrne (14) and Kevin Fennelly (9), who were one behind with 43pts. Third place went to local pair John Barcoe (13) and James Doyle (17) with 41pts.

The next open Sunday competition is on Sunday, April 14. To help with practise for club matches, the competition will be an 18-hole Scotch foursomes.

LADIES - Club members Kate Hennessey and Maura Coe were among the prize-winners in the Squirrels Winter Alliance, which was held at Killerig GC recently.

A TRIP TO Castlecomer GC proved to be a successful one for Blessington GC member Chris Howard, who won the men’s open singles competition at the weekend.

Playing off 16, Howard beat a tightly-packed field with a score of 41pts. Part of his run to victory included a great back nine of 22pts, enough to hold off local members Mick O’Neill and Damien Fogarty.

LADIES - The Ladies notched up a win in the first inter-club competition of the year when Nuala Mahon and Delia O’Donohue prevailed in the Daily Mail competition on Sunday.

Facing into bitterly cold winds Delia and Nuala dovetailed well in the foursome, taking a strong lead against The Heath GC as they turned to face the back nine.

The Heath made a valiant comeback but the ’Comer duo held their form, ensuring the win to move through to the next round. Manager Patricia Doheny was delighted with the outcome.

Results, ladies 18-hole singles (GOY competition), March 9/10: 1 Mary Brophy, 35pts; 2 Maria Downey, 33pts; 3 Nuala Mahon, 31pts (back nine).

The Spring League continues every Tuesday at the club. All lady members are welcome to participate in the social nine-hole competition, with the draw at 10.15am.

QUIZ - All members are encouraged to enter a team in the table quiz on Friday at 9pm. Entry for a table of four is E25 for a night out with cash prizes for the winners.

MEMBERSHIP - Full membership is currently available at Castlecomer GC for E600, including GUI levies and insurance. For E1,000 a new member can join with an existing member, sharing the cost between themselves.

Further information is available from any existing member or the office, which is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 5.30pm and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.

SCORING proved tough when the O’Dwyer Golf Stores open singles started at Callan GC on Wednesday.

A solid 36pt return saw Paul Norris become the first golfer to make the Autumn playoff, where he will be joined by Brian Doheny. Qualification continues throughout Spring, Summer and Autumn, with numbers and temperatures sure to rise as the weeks progress.

The competition includes an early bird option for visitors before noon, a popular choice over the years.

FOURBALL - The first of the matchplay events suffered a false start thanks to heavy downpours and freezing conditions. When play got underway on Saturday Niall O’Sullivan and Benny Butler took with 45pts with Nigel O’Donovan and Denis Carey second on 43pts.

The fourball qualifier will be rearranged with details to follow. The club will host an open four-person team event this weekend.

LADIES - The Ladies continued their good form at the Alliance in Clonmel last week, Helena McCormack winning out with some excellent scoring.

At home Anne Wemyss had an excellent score of 29pts to beat Mary Norton by a shot in the 12-hole stableford competition.

DIFFICULT conditions prevailed, but they couldn’t stop a large field from playing in the 18-hole aggregate fourball competition at New Ross GC over the weekend.

Winners of the Four Star Pizza-sponsored competition were Pat Fitzharris (18) and P.J. Doyle (5) with an excellent score of 75pts. The father and son combination of John Harrington (17) and Ted Harrington (12) were second with 74pts, while Noel Cowman (11) and Tom Fenlon were third on 73pts.

Nearest the pin prizes went to P.J. Doyle (2), Richard O’Grady (9), Colm Kehoe (11) and Phil Lynch (14). Longest drives winners were Derek Ronan (15) and Phil Lynch (18).

The presentation of prizes for this competition will be held on Monday at 7.30pm, with all prize-winners asked to attend. Finger food will be served while there will also be a draw for non-prize winners attending this presentation.

FOURBALL - The Dermot Kehoe DIY-sponsored 18-hole betterball fourball will be held across the St Patrick’s Weekend.

The competition is for men and women (any combination) and is also open to visitors. Tee times can be booked online.

MATCHPLAY - Entries are now being taken at the pro shop for the men’s foursomes matchplay. Entry fee is E15 per pair, with the closing date for entries fixed for Tuesday, April 2.

DRAW - The weekly winner of the Find the Joker draw was Jimmy Furlong. The jackpot is now heading for E1,900. Entry is E2, payable at the bar.

LADIES - The ladies 18-holes competitions resume today (Wednesday) for the coming season. Draws for this 18-hole stableford, which is sponsored by French’s Pharmacy, will be made from 9 to 9.15am and 1 to 1.15pm.

Winners of the ladies Daily Mail foursomes competition, which was held on Friday, were Maria Burford and Margaret Murphy.

There will be a presentation of prizes this evening (Wednesday) at 7.30pm for all outstanding competitions. All prize-winners are asked to attend.

Club member Mary Dowling has been included on the Leinster inter-provincial team.

Mary will fly the flag for the club when she is in inter-provincial action at Castle Dargan GC, Sligo from April 3 to 6.

SENIORS - Winners of the Seniors competition on Thursday were Patsy Farrell (14), Tony Redmond (17), Tony Wallace (18) and Michael Long (19) on 89pts. Beaten on a countback on the last nine holes was the team of Nigel Morrissey (13), Willie Naddy (18), Sean Ryan (22) and Brian Dolan (22), who also registered 89pts.

The 85 point tally garnered by Hughie O’Connor (14), Noel Kehoe (16), Peter Goggin (17) and Michael Brennan (19) was good enough for a third place finish. The nearest the pin prize on the ninth hole was won by Brian Dolan.

The Seniors’ outing tomorrow (Thursday) is a special one with all entry fees (E5 per person) going to the Ladies Committee who are raising finance to fund the provision of a much needed lift in the Golf Club. As an added attraction, there will be a raffle prize of dinner for two, which has been presented by Padraig Murphy, the club’s new caterers.

The Seniors will also collect names and green fees (E10) on Thursday for their first outing of 2013. A party will head to Tramore GC on Thursday, April 4.


THE James Stephens Golf Society will hold their first outing of the year at Bunclody GC on Saturday.
