In the men’s July monthly played over the weekend at Kilkenny golf club, sponsored by Duggan Lynch, the scoring was very hot with 67 net required to feature in the prizes. The winner with a great score of 64 net was Paddy Bollard (16). Paddy had a split of 40 on both nines.
He recorded birdies on the 4th, 5th and 18th. He could have had a phenomenal score if he hadn’t recorded two successive triple bogies with an eight on the 9th hole and a six on the 10th. The runner up, with the best of the 66s’, was handicap secretary Mark Grant (10). Mark shot 76 gross with a split of 39 and 37.
He had a steady round which included one birdie, 12 pars and 6 bogies. Third was greens committee chairman Billy Burke (11). Billy shot 77 gross with a split of 39 and 38. Billy had no birdies but he recorded an eagle on the 12th. The gross was won by Eoin Cantwell (4) with 75 gross.
The presentation of prizes will be on Friday (9.30pm).
The ladies 18 hole stableford Maisie Lambe competition last week was won by Helen Butler (26) with 40 points. Helen won on the count back from Teresa Buckley (28) and Ann Greaney (19), who also recorded 40 points. Teresa secured second place and Ann third. The gross was won by Mary Leahy Browne (3) with 34 gross points. The competition was sponsored by Langton’s House Hotel.
The senior men played for Captain Luke Kelly’s prize on Thursday of last week. The winner with a phenomenal 35 points for the 13 holes was Matt Ruth (15). Matt had five points to spare over Martin Treacy (22).
Winners of the team event were Geoff Meagher (14), Michael O’Reilly (19), Jack Nolan (22) and Jim O’Connell (28) with 66 points. Geoff had birdies on the 8th and 10th. His partners contributed their share of pars. Second were Willie P. Murphy (14), John O’Regan (18), Martin Treacy (22) and Dave Schofield (27) on 64 points. Third were Martin Murphy (16), John Peters (16), Michael O’Neill (23) on 64 points (59+5).
The senior men had an outing to Mountrath recently. The winners of the team event were Pat Foley (12), Jimmy Rhatigan (18) and Nicky Lawlor (20) with a great score of 100 points. The competition was a four person team event and as they only had three they were given a bonus of six points to add to their score of 94 points which gave them the magic 100 total.
They didn’t require the bonus. The next best score was 88 points recorded by runners-up Noel Skehan (14), Donie Butler (23), Pat Kelleher (26) and Martin Cody (24). Third were John O’Donovan (17), Finbar Coughlan (22), Chris Rainey (23) and Dermot Moloney (21) on 86 points.
The senior ladies competition on Thursday was won by Kitty Nolan, Greta Nicholson, Kathleen Kelly and Aileen Hehir with 37 points. Runners-up on 34 points were Lady Captain Sheila Brennan, Edith Ogilvie and Joan Mannion.
PRESENTATIONS: There will be a men’s prize presentation on Friday (9.30pm). Prizes will be presented for the ladies and gents Open singles on July 3, the Open men’s seniors on July 17, Junior Scratch Cup on July 14 and July Monthly medal on July 28.
CLUB MATCHPLAY: The various match play series are progressing nicely. The men’s fourball and foursomes have reached the quarter-finals and are due for completion by August 3 and 9 respectively. The men’s singles is it at the semi-final stage with Alan Byrne v Martin Treacy and Eddie Power v Billy Burke.
The mixed foursomes is also at semi-final stage with Roger and Mary Ryan v James and Nuala Crotty and Tony McCarthty and Geraldine O’Connor v Anthony Cleere and Helen Devane. Matches to be completed by August 19. The next round of the Bar Cup is due to be played by August 5 and next round of Scratch matchplay by August 19.

There will be a change in the schedule of the ladies tee times from this week. The slots from 4pm to 5pm will be draw for partners and 5.10 to 5.45pm will be bookable online. Also, the morning draw slots of 10.10 to 10.20 will be reserved for a 9 holes competition for those who do not want to play 18 holes. The holes will be 1 to 9 and the entry fee will be €3.

JUNIOR and JUVENILE: Parents and guardians have been asked to ensure children are at the putting green on time for the Saturday coaching sessions. Due to the numbers at each session children attend their correct session.
The club thanked volunteers for their continued support and asked any parents to make themselves available to assist on the Saturday mornings.
