McCormack wins Tankard

THE rescheduled Men’s PGA Tankard, held at Kilkenny GC over the weekend, was won by Liam McCormack.

Playing off 15, Liam carded a score of 67 net as he won on the back nine from Gerard Dowling (16) who also returned 67. Liam was out in 42 and back in 40. Ger had halves of 42 and 41 for his score of 67.

Third place went to Mick O’Flynn (14) with the best of the 68 point finishes while the gross was won by Eddie Power (+1) with level par 71 gross.

Four players were disqualified for improper returns. Three only had one signature while the fourth had no handicap on the card.

SINGLES - The first Ladies & Gents open singles competition of the season was held on Wednesday.

Winner of the gents section was Emmet Boland (10) with 39pts. Emmet was out in 17pts and came back in 22pts. Emmet came back in one over par 36 strokes for his 22pts with the help of birdies on the 10th and 14th.

Emmet won on the back nine from Pat Walshe (11), who also had 39pts with a breakdown of 18 and 21pts. Pat finished strongly and was two under par for the last four holes, but just came up short.

Anthony Cleere (5) covered the round in 74 strokes and was in third place with the best of the 38pt finishes. The gross was won by Richard Guilfoyle (3) with 35 gross points.

The Ladies section was won by Eileen Fogarty (20) with 29pts.

FUNCTION - The social committee are running a function in the club on St Patrick’s Night. Food will be served at 8.30pm and will be followed by the prize presentation for the Paddy Raggett-sponsored open three-person team event, with music bringing the evening’s entertainment to a close.

Tickets cost E10 and are available from committee members or the office. Members who cannot make the meal are welcome to come along and enjoy the music afterwards.

BRIDGE - The social committee are also attempting to start Bridge lessons in the club on Monday nights. Sheets have been posted on the notice-boards for all interested to place their names.

For lessons to commence there is a requirement of a minimum of 16 people - there are already five names on the sheet. The cost of lessons will be E8 per night, with lessons running for 12 nights approximately.

INTER-CLUB - The inter-club scene is set to take off shortly, with team managers already posting panels and teams.

The Irish Mixed team will take on Carlow GC on Saturday, April 13 at 2pm. Selectors Denis Brophy and Catherine King have named the following team: Home - Owen Phelan (7) & Joan Cody (13), Kieran Wall (4) & Helen Butler (25), Brendan Hogan (4) & Dervilla O’Byrne (21). Away - Richard Duggan (1) & Barbara Teehan (25), Richard Guilfoyle (3) & Jacintha Culliton (21). Reserves: Anthony Cleere (4) & Breda Roche (14).

The Jimmy Bruen panel, as selected by Anthony Cleere, Derek Shelly and Kieran Wall, is: Alan Byrne, Derek Campion, Paul Cleere, Eugene Deegan, Dermot Doyle, Kieran Hoban, Michael Keenan, Jason Lawlor, Richard Manogue, John Marnell, Ian Meagher, Kevin Power, Mark Power, Colm Sheenan, Derek Shelley, David Shortall, Robert Shortall, Luke Wall, Pat Walsh and James Young.

The successful Finn Trophy team from 2012 will defend their title this year. The Ladies Challenge Cup team will take on Portarlington in Abbeyleix on Monday, April 15. The panel is: Joan Cashin (30), Katie Keenan (30), Breda Kavanagh (30), Kay Gray (30), Jacintha Hurley (31), Francis Graham (31) and Maria Bradfield (34). Managers are Joan Mannion and Greta Nicholson.

MEMBERSHIP - A limited introductory first year membership offer is open to applicants on the club’s waiting list and for other interested parties.

SNOOKER - Paul Hanafin beat Jimmy Rhatigan while Martin Hanrick saw off Christy Power to reach the semi-finals of the snooker singles.

There are two quarter-finals still outstanding.

SUGGESTION BOX - A suggestion box has been placed in the hallway at the entrance to the clubhouse for members to submit ideas that might benefit the club.

All suggestions must contain the name and address of the member submitting the suggestion. Anonymous suggestions will be discarded.

SENIORS - The first round of the Seniors Golfer of the Year competition is on tomorrow (Thursday).

The competition features two categories. Category One will be for players of 20 handicap and under. Category Two will be for golfers of handicap 21 and upwards.

The competition, which has a 13-hole singles stableford format, will run in conjunction with the usual team event.
