GOWRAN PARK has announced details of their Open Singles weekend.

GOWRAN PARK has announced details of their Open Singles weekend.

The competition, which will run from June 3 to 6, gives competitors the chance to nominate their society for a free draw. The winning society will get a Friday outing free of charge from the club.

DUGGAN CUP - Following their previous win against Enniscorthy, the Duggan Cup team are in fine form and looking forward to their encounter with Mount Juliet on Friday. The action begins at 4pm.

TOWNS CUP - Gowran’s Provincial Towns Cup team bowed out of this year’s competition on a 5-4 scoreline against Kilkenny, despite having taken two matches away.

The Pierce Purcell team put up a good performance, but came up shy of qualifying for the knockout stages on Sunday. The competition was held in Borris Golf Club.

LADIES - The Ladies Monthly Medal strokeplay competition will be held today (Wednesday). The following week will be a one day competition only (June 1), in a V-Par format.

The monthly prize-giving, including the nine hole continuous, will be held this evening (Wednesday) at 9pm.

The Intermediate team were beaten in Callan against Castlecomer. It was a hard-fought battle with Deirdre McCabe going to the 23rd hole and Ann Farrell going to the 19th after being five down at one stage. Despite great efforts it wasn’t to be on the day. The players were Deirdre McCabe, Eileen Tobin, Ann Farrell, Ger Hickey and Sally Kavanagh.

There was better luck for the Gowran Park minor team, who had a great win over Kilkenny in New Ross. Team was Karen Haughney, Catherine O’Driscoll, Joan Murphy, Catherine O’Connor and Helen Dunne.

It was third time lucky for the Finn Trophy team, who got past the first round of the competition at the third attempt when they beat Waterford Castle at Gowran Park. The team featured Niamh Connolly & Deirdre McCabe, Sinead Kearney & Karen Haughney, Ann Mullins & Ger Hickey, Breda Bolger & Catherine O’Connor and Nora Barron & Helen Dunne.

The Miele team had a great win over Castlecomer recently. Team was Sinead Kearney & Karen Haughney (away), Breda Bolger & Linda Donohoe (away), Niamh Connolly & Deirdre McCabe and Nora Barron & Catherine O’Connor.

Results, Australian Spoons: 1 Ger Hickey & Gay Latchford, 38pts; 2 Deirdre McCabe & Catherine O’Connor, 37pts.

JUNIORS - Coaching for junior boys and girls of all ages continues each Saturday, with all welcome to attend. A Summer programme of events and competitions will also begin in June.

LEINSTER - The club’s South Leinster team were beaten in a close-fought first round match against defending champions Dunmurray Springs, who had the advantage of a home draw.

At home good results from the Gowran Park team of Pat Staunton (won 4&3), Liam Hutchinson (won 4&3) and Tom Dack (lost 4&3) gave the locals a good chance of causing an upset.

The away team had it all to do in very windy conditions. Aidan Grogan lipped out on the 18th to lose one down. James Fitzgerald was one up standing on the 18th, while James Fisher and Tommy Bolger were both beaten 3&2.

Team managers Melvyn Kennedy and John Barcoe thanked all involved for their efforts.
