Liz wins Captain’s prize to the ladies

Liz Cleere (17) won Captain Seamus Rochford’s prize to the ladies which was played on Sunday. Liz shot 71 net. She had one shot to spare from Catherine King (72) and Niamh Spratt (14), who both returned 72 to take second and third places respectively.

The gross was won by Eileen Rose Power (scr) with a 75 gross. The junior prize was won by Kathlyn Leahy (24) with a 75 net. Mary Condon had a hole in one on the 17th.

Niall O’Gorman (7) was the winner of the ladies and gents Open singles played last week. Niall shot 74 gross with halves of 39 and 35. His score of 35 was level par for the back nine and was helped with birdies on the 10th, 12th and 17th.

Fergal Cantwell and Ciaran Colfer, both playing off 8 handicap, returned 39 points to take second and third places respectively. The gross was won by Richard Guilfoyle (4) with 33 gross points.

The ladies section attracted a small entry. It was won by Mary Leahy Browne (4) on 33 points. Kathleen Gaffney was second on 32 points.

A total of 27 ladies played in the weekly competition over Sunday and Tuesday of last week. Conditions were poor on both days. This was reflected in the scoring with only one lady managing to break 80 net.

Pat Walsh (21) won with a 76. She had four strokes to spare from Mary Dowling (scr) with 80 net. Mary shot an 80 gross but as she won second net prize the gross prize went to Mary Leahy Browne with an 86 gross. The standard scratch for both days was 76.

The men’s senior competition on May 3 was won by Willie Murphy (13), Joe Doyle (21), Michael Barry (26) and Pat Kelleher (26) with 63 points. Runners-up were Denis Carey (12), Michael Cody (19), Joe O’Driscoll (26) and Austin Kiely (23) on 61 points. The senior ladies were away in Rathdowney. Results not to hand.

Members should note placing will discontinue from Wednesday, May 9. The ball must be played as it lies throughout the course. SOCIAL MIXED GOLF: Social mixed golf on Friday evening. Sign in at 5.30pm for shotgun start at 6pm. FOURSOMES DRAWS: The draw for the men’s foursomes and mixed foursomes have been made and are posted on the notice board. The prelimianary round of the men’s foursomes is due to be played by May 25.

The first round of the mixed is due for completion also by May 25. The onus is on the pairings on the top of the draw to organise the match.

MENS INTER CLUB: The next round of the Provincial Towns Cup is scheduled for Thursday, May 17 (4pm) against Enniscorhty. The Barton cup team will take on the winners of Tuskar Rock and Courtown.

INSURANCE SCHEME: The club will shortly be closing applications for the AON insurance scheme. Anyone interested should place their name on the board.

This scheme covers personal injury on the golf course and also theft of golf clubs. The price is €20. ADOPT A GREEN: After a break due to the Bank Holiday, divot repairing and the repair of greens will resume on Monday (7pm). LADIES INTER CLUB: The ladies senior foursomes team played Castlecomer in Callan and emerged victorious by 2½ to ½. Eileen Rose Power and Breda Roche won on the 17th. Mary Leahy Browne and Mary Norton won on the 15th. The third match involving Margaret Cuddihy and Bridie McGarry were all flat when called in.

The Finn Trophy team took on Portarlington with all five matches in Kilkenny. The team scored a 4-1 win. Mary Leahy Browne (4) and Marian Woods (17) won 5 and 4; Bridie McGarry (9) and Paula Bradbury (16) won 2 and 1; Margaret Cuddihy (8) and Bridget Norwood (19) were all flat when called in on 16th.

Joan Cody (13) and Liz Cleere (17) won 6 and 5. Mary Norton (12) and Ann Widger (20) were all flat when called in on the 14th. The team was managed by Catherine King and Greta Nicholson

In the Miele Trophy on Saturday, Kilkenny lost 2½ to 1½ to Thurles. Away Mags Cuddihy and Mary Bradshaw lost 5 and 4; Loan Cody and Liz Cleere lost on the 18th.

At home Liz Kinsella and Anne Widger won 5 and 4 and Bridie McGarry and Dervilla O’Byrne were beaten on the 19th. The team was managed by Patti Burke and Joan Cashin.

The ladies Senior Cup team will head to Tullamore this weekend for the Midland Leinster area qualifier. This is the premier inter-club event in the ladies section and involves the lower handicappers. All matches played off scratch.

Kilkenny will be represented by Mary Dowling, Eileen Rose Power, Orla Dunphy, Mary Leahy Browne and Bridie McGarry. Reserves Ann Smee and Rebecca Mulholland.

Kilkenny take on Blainroe on Saturday (8am). The winners play either Athy or Tullamore in the quarter-final at 1.30pm. Kilkenny will be fancied to do well as the two main threats, Enniscorthy and Carlow, are in the other half of the draw.

If Kilkenny progress, they will not encounter them until the final on Sunday afternoon.
