The following is a round up the news from Kilkenny golf clubs this week:
There was an interesting finale when as the singles matchplay competition drew to a close at Callan GC last weekend.
After a titanic struggle Denis Carey beat the 2011 Golfer of the Year Tom Kenny to the spoils.
Tom took an early lead and was three up through the first eight holes but Denis fought back, winning the ninth and 10th holes to trail by two holes crossing the road. Birdies on 15 and 17 ensured the pair were level going up the final hole and pars meant that they went to extra holes. The 19th was also halved before Denis won a fantastic battle on the 20th hole.
It was the second time that Denis has won the club matchplay - the first time was way back in 1989 when he defeated this year’s Presidents Prize winner, Marty Parker, in the final.
TURKEY & HAMS - The latest turkey and ham competition saw Richie Needham compile a fabulous 46pts to bring home the turkey with some top class scoring. Denis Collins finished second with 44pts while Jim Wellwood was third on 43pts. The turkey and hams are up for grabs every weekend until Christmas.
