This week’s news from around Kilkenny golf clubs

Inclement weather meant there was not too much competitive golf in the past few weeks at Mount Juliet GC, but after a frost-delayed start the member/guest fourball stableford got away. A good entry of players saw a very decisive victory by two Thurles-based players.

Inclement weather meant there was not too much competitive golf in the past few weeks at Mount Juliet GC, but after a frost-delayed start the member/guest fourball stableford got away. A good entry of players saw a very decisive victory by two Thurles-based players.

The pairing of John Stakelum and Donal Hurley returned an excellent score of 47pts to spreadeagle the remainder of the field, beating their nearest rivals by four shots.

Their back nine included two holes where they scored 4pts on each hole, Donal Hurley scoring birdies on the 12th and 15th, which helped them to accumulate a total of 23pts for the last nine holes to add to their first nine hole score of 24pts.

Their nearest pursuers were Sean Brett and Larry Whelan on 43pts, with the local pairing of Mark Magnier and John Browne in third place on 42pts.

WINTER - The men’s and general section of the club have completed five rounds of the Winter League. With three rounds remaining, the team of John Smith, J.D. Harding, Paul Rice and Michael Daly seem to have an unassailable advantage. The struggle for second place is proving exciting, with one point between the sides in second and third places.

Despite the difficult conditions, Paul Rice (10) and Michael Daly (15) won the weekend’s Winter 15-hole competition with 71pts.

Sean Greene got the better of the elements to come top of the pile in the singles stableford at a wet and windy Callan GC over the weekend.

Playing off 16, Sean notched up a 40pt total which proved unassailable in the conditions. Seamus Burke (20) was second on 38pts while Jim Wellwood’s consistent play led him to third place on 35pts.

A measure of the difficulty provided by conditions was reflected in the numbers of birdie twos recorded on the day - just three scored deuces in their rounds, one of the lowest totals ever recorded in the club over a weekend. Three golfers will receive €30 each for their birdies. It is hoped that conditions will be better for the fourball competition this weekend.
