There were mixed fortunes for two teams involved in inter-club matches on Sunday. The ladies Challenge Cup team did very well against Mount Wolseley at Borris GC. They scored a comprehensive 4-1 victory.
The first three games were won and the last two were called in. Karan Murphy won by three holes. She was followed by Pauline McEnery and Anne Murphy, who won by margins of six and five.
The two remaining matches involving Mount Juliet players, Alison Hoyne and Elizabeth McCalmont, were called in. Thanks went to managers Helen Hedigan and Brenda O’Sullivan and to the caddies who travelled and assist in the win.
The men’s Barton Cup team were narrowly beaten by New Ross. It was hoped this team might progress with their strong panel, but the Wexford team prevailed 3&2.
At Mount Juliet Luke Donnelly and Kevin McCartan scored a good 5&4 win while Paul Madigan and John Hession lost 3&2.
In New Ross Alan and Ted Hoyne were beaten 5&4 while P.J. Aylward and Brian Blanchfield lost on the final hole.
Between these two matches Graham Robinson and Dermot Fennelly had a narrow victory on the last hole.
APRIL - There was a great turnout for the April ladies invitation day, the first of the 2014 season. The competition, a three-person rumble, was won by Ruth Mulholland and guests with 71pts. Aileen Magee’s team were second on 70pts, edging out Bernie Madigan’s team on a countback.
TEAM - On Sunday there was a member/guest four person team event played. Victory went to John O’Dwyer, Paul Cashin, Sean Waltzer and Michael Brennan, who combined well to register an impressive 100pts. The Callan-based team scored 51 and 49 points on the splits and were decisive winners.

The final round of the Spring Series qualifiers was played on Thursday and Friday. Lawrence Walsh (Gowran Park), took the honours on a countback from Larry Byrne, Wexford, with 40pts.
Alex Dunne, Gowran Park and Ray Danne, Baltinglass also qualified. The final has been scheduled for Friday. Finalists have been notified and are asked to register at 10am in the golf office. There will be a shotgun start at 10.30am.

INTER-CLUB - The first round of the Irish mixed foursomes was played on Sunday. With an away draw, three pairings headed to St Helen’s Bay, Rosslare and two were at home. All matches were close with two going down to the 19th, but the overall outcome was a 4-1 loss.
The team, managed by Liam O’Dwyer and Hilary Dick, was Deirdre McCabe & Paul Whelan, Kate Hennessy & Michael Dillon, Sinead Kearney & Joe Lannon (away), Ann Mullins & Olan Corcoran, Niamh Connolly & Larry Comerford (home).
The ladies intermediate team was narrowly beaten by Castlecomer on Saturday. The match, which was played in Kilkenny GC, was close with two matches going down to a putt on the 18th.
The other match was lost on the 17th while Gowran had one won on the 16th and were two up in the last match on the 17th when called in. Team was Eileen Tobin, Ger Hickey, Margaret Logue, Rachel Dick and Helen Dunne.
LADIES - Results, ladies 18-hole stableford, April 1: 1 Rachel Dick (22) 38pts.
Sunday’s Open foursomes competition is an 18 hole Scotch. The competition format (two drives to take place and alternate shots from there) will help various pairings to take advantage of some competitive practice. Timesheet is in operation. It is available from the golf office or online.

A birdie four on the first hole was a sign of things to come for Shay Kennedy in the men’s single stableford. Shay continued on from the great start to record a five over par round and victory with 41pts. Colin Dunne shot a great round of two over par to finish second with 39pts.

LADIES: The weekend ladies competition, sponsored by Reidy and Foley, was won by Loretta Mansfield with an impressive score of 40pts. Hanoria Fogarty was second with 37pts, with Ann Ring third on 33pts.
Ann Ring was also part of the intermediate team that enjoyed success in their inter-club competition in Kilkenny, beating Gowran Park in the first round.
Team was Ann Ring, Catherine Cooney, Betty Byrne, Lady Captain Ita Madigan and Theresa Manning. Managers were Maria Downey and Joan Brennan.
The Spring League continues with team members committed to bringing in winning points for their team. Matches are to be organised between the participants and are to be played within the time frame. Match details and deadlines are on the club noticeboard.
SOCIAL NEWS - The Tuesday scramble is up and running. Draw for playing partners is held every Tuesday between 5 and 6pm. Members’ entry fee is €3, visitors €5.
The great ‘Cook Off’ event between Cathal O’Dowd and Audrey Farrell is on Friday in the clubhouse. Tickets (€10) available from the clubhouse or committee members.
LOTTO - The jackpot now stands at €9,600. Numbers drawn on March 31 were 16, 22, 23, 24. Tickets cost €2 and are available locally.
Sunday’s round of the Spring League was cancelled due to heavy rain. The third round is on next weekend.
LEINSTER - The club team lost 3-2 to St Helen’s Bay in the first round of the Leinster fourball trophy at the weekend. Team was Jim Dunne, Nicholas Fennelly, Michael Bookle, John Coleman, Tommy Grace, Dick Grant, Tom Grant, Jimmy Rochford, Frank Culleton and Michael Grace.
SPRING - Last week’s Open Spring series qualifier was won by Mark Murphy (17, New Ross) with 39pts.
FIXTURE CHANGE - Owing to the Pierce Purcell Shield tie scheduled for May 17/18 the following changes were made to the 2014 Fixture List: Sunday, April 20, April medal; Sunday, April 27, club doubles qualifier; Sunday, May 4, Spring League fourth round and B/H Open weekend; Sunday, May 11, May medal and club singles qualifier; Sunday, May 18, single stableford.

MATCHPLAY - The second matchplay event of the season started at the weekend. In tough and windy conditions Larry Malone and Mick Murphy (Kilkenny) carded an excellent 45pts. They were installed as top seeds in the subsequent matchplay draw. Keith and John O’Dwyer were second on 42pts, pipping Justin Duggan and Patrick Russell on a countback.
