SEAN Walzer hosted his Vice-Captain’s prize at Callan GC over the weekend, but had a special guest as the last of Hurricane Katia battered the course to make for testing conditions.
Darrell Doheny, who has only recently returned from a long stint in Australia, kept his round together brilliantly to beat Don Bolger by finishing the back nine stronger.
Stephen McCormack also played excellent golf in the conditions finishing in third on 38 points. Hugh Fitzpatrick won the gross with a solid 31 points, while Tom Kenny was fourth and Andy Needham fifth.
There was close to 100 golfers who braved the gales, with Darrell was thrilled to come home in front having had a long association with the club since joining as a junior member in the 1990s. Darrell now has the honour of being the only golfer who can complete a brilliant double when he lines up to win Sean Walzer’s Captain’s Prize in July 2012.
The battle for Junior Golfer of the Year was also settled this weekend when David Walzer capped a brilliant season, edging out Luke Donnelly to claim the coveted title.
