Exciting fare for club finals day

THE club finals day was held at Kilkenny GC on Saturday. It provided some very exciting golf, which enthralled the participants and the members who turned out to support the finalists.

Richard Guilfoyle beat Noel O’Sullivan in the club singles. Noel was one up with three holes to play and, with shots on the final three holes, looked favourite to come through. However, Noel faltered slightly on the run in allowing Richie to win the match on the 18th. He had two putts to win the hole but only needed one when he had a birdie.

The men’s fourball was won by Derek Shelley and Michael Raggett. They were up early in the match and maintained the lead, beating Eddie Power and Liam Barrett on the 16th.

In the mixed foursomes Paul Cleere and Phyl Doyle were one down with two to play against Michael Grant and Teresa Buckley, but pars on the 17th and 18th proved sufficient to win one up.

The men’s foursomes was won by Peter Ryan and Tom Lawlor who beat Michael Grant and Geoff Meagher. The match was all square playing the 18th, where Peter and Tom recorded a par to win one up.

In the men’s scratch matchplay Richard Duggan beat Graham Nugent on the 18th in the semi-final on Thursday. He repeated the feat by beating Eddie Power on the 18th again in the final on Friday morning. Eddie won the 14th and 15th to go one up with three to play, but Richard parred the last three holes and won one up.

In the ladies section Margaret Kiely beat Mags Cuddihy on the 13th in the Toastal Cup. Niamh Kelly was four up early on against Joan O’Gorman in the National Cup and closed out the match on the 17th while in the Nancy Todd Trophy Breege Martin beat Grainne Parker on the 18th.

The Nore Cup was won by Mary Gorman, who beat Helen Butler. The Ladies Scotch foursomes went to Mary Norton and Mary Moynihan, who beat the mother and daughter partnership of Mary Leahy Browne and her daughter Sara.

The men’s Golfer of the Year award went to Brendan Hogan, with Dave deLoughrey in the runners-up spot. Lady Golfer of the Year was Devilla O’Byrne.

JUNIOR CUP - The Ladies Junior Cup team who won the Midland district final in Roscrea last Sunday week will be in action at the National finals in Ardee GC this week.

The Junior Cup is for ladies of eight handicap and up and all matches are played off flat. The team is: Bridie McGarry, Evelyn Crotty, Mags Cuddihy, Phyl Doyle and Mary Norton. Reserves: Margaret Kiely and Breda Roche.

The team will compete in the quarter-finals today (Wednesday) against Shandon Park at 11am. If they win they will contest a semi-final with Newlands tomorrow (Thursday) from 8.30am. The Junior Cup final will tee off at 11.30am on Friday.

SINGLES - John Keogh (16), having already won the Open singles on August 3, repeated the feat when he again returned 41 points to win the Open singles competition on Wednesday.

John was out in 42 strokes and back in 40 for an 82 gross and 41 points. John’s handicap was 17 at the beginning of August and now finds himself playing off 14.

Second place was won by Alan Phelan (2) from Rathdowney who shot 69 gross for 40 points. Alan had five birdies on his card. Two other players Tony O’Reilly (20) and Pat Collins (12) also returned 40 points while the gross was won by Brendan Power (5) with 33 points. Catherine Leahy (27) won the ladies section with 37 points with Lady Competition secretary Mary Bradshaw (20) in second place on 34 points.

SCOTCH - Local members Bill and Mags Cuddihy emerged as the winners of the Open Husband and Wife Scotch Foursomes competition, which was sponsored by Nolans Jewellers, on Sunday.

Bill, playing off 15, and Mags, off 8, returned 41 points. They turned with 23 and added 18 on the back nine.
