A draw for partners will be made on Wednesday evening. Times will be allocated within a half hour of your original time.

BRUEN TEAM: The Jimmy Bruen team headed to New Ross on Saturday for the qualifying round. While the weather hampered practice, the team performed well. However, they failed to qualify for the knock-out stages.

This weekend is the last chance saloon on the men’s inter-club scene when the Senior Cup side plays in Rosslare.

The mid-week 9 hole competition continues today (Wednesday). It is proving very popular. Last week there was an entry of over 55 competitors. Kevin Maher (14) won with 23 points.

THE OPEN: The Open three person Rumble on Sunday was very successful with a full time sheet in place throughout the day. Michael Green, Tim Buckley and Trevor Browne, all Waterford GC, took the leading spot with 87 points. They were delighted with their first prize of digital cameras.

Second were Mick Lane (Gowran Park), Kieran Fitzgerald (Gowran Park) and Joe O’Brien (Newbridge) with 85 points, while Pat Kirwan (Gowran Park), Larry Gittens (Kilkenny) and D. Dowling (Rathdowney) were third with 82 points.

There will be another Open three person Tea Event on Sunday, July 1. The timesheet is now open at 056 7726699. Early booking advisable.

Another date for the diary is the Intermediate Scratch Cup on Sunday, July 15.

Jim Murphy, Mount Wolseley GC took top spot in last Thursday’s Open singles. Jim took advantage of his early teetime to score 34 points before the weather got bad. Frank Lannon was second with 31 points. Competition continues this Thursday.

LADIES: Congratulation to the Boyne team who beat Callan by winning 2 matches at home and one away in the second round. Team - Nora Barron and Joan Murphy, Eileen Tobin and Catherine O’Driscoll, Ger Hickey and Peggy Canning, Ann Mullins and Kathleen Whitehead, Ann Farrell and Helen Dunne. The manager is Joan Murphy. The next round is against Abbeyleix.

The Miele team of Sinead Kearney and Catherine O’Connor, Deirdre McCabe and Anne Farrell, Hilary and Judy Dick, Eileen Tobin and Catherine O’Driscoll, managed by Eileen Walsh and Ger Hickey, lost 3-1 against Coollattin in the second round.

The Challenge team are busy practicing for the next round against Waterford Castle in Kilkenny on July 4. Panel - Eithne Donnelly, Brigid Mullins, Mary Purcell, Mary Harding, Sarah Murphy, Fionnuala Hennebry and Ina Sweeney.

JUNIORS: The under-15 juniors played in the Leinster inter-club matchplay last week. They defeated a good Mount Juliet side 3-2 in a thrilling. Both sides played some great golf in what were extremely testing conditions.

Credit to the greenkeeping staff for getting the course playable and getting the match played.

Of the seven matches played, three finished on the 17th hole, three on the 18th and the other match went to the 19th. First out was Ciaran Whelan, who was playing in his first competitive match. He showed great composure in beating his opponent on the 18th.

James Bergin got off to a great start by winning the opening three holes. He was brought back level at the turn. It was a great battle on the back nine and it was level after 18 holes. On the 19th James kept his nerve to record a great victory.

In the third match Sean Roche was never ahead against a very good opponent. He put in a fighting performance on the back 9 and would have levelled on the 18th but for a great putt by his opponent.

Sean Carey put on a great display of driving and came from two down to win on the last hole. In the 5th game Matt Kenny had a great battle with the Mount Juliet No. 1. He was three down early on and recovered to go two up by the 12th.

In a high class game he lost out on the 17th. The first reserve Gareth Graham, who conceded four strokes, was in great form. He recorded his first win for the club with one hole to spare.

First timer Thomas Dowling showed great promise before being edged out on the 17th. Gowran Park has two matches to play in this competition, a home fixture against Carlow on Friday and an away match to be arranged against Coollattin.

Competitions will continue every Monday 18 holes. Meet at 10am for 10.30am and 9 holes meet at 12noon. for 12.30pm start. Format will be decided on the day.

Junior Summer coaching is underway. Any junior/juvenile members interested should contact Dominic for coaching groups and times. The junior matchplay draw is posted on the junior notice board.

The ‘Girls N Golf’ programme next session is on Saturday with Groups A at 4pm and Group B at 5pm.
