Lady President Joan Mannion’s prize was played for on Sunday. The Ladies Committee decided to allow juvenile/junior and student members compete for the adult prizes. The winner was student member Sonia Buggy (25) with 42 points. Second was Mary Leahy Browne (3) with 34 points. The gross was won by Ann Smee (5) with 28 gross points.
Category A was won by Bridie McGarry (8) with 33 points and categories B and C were won by juvenile members Sarah Molloy (20) and Sinead Ryan (36), both with 34 points. The ladies had a meal in the clubhouse Sunday night. The Lady President thanked everyone who helped to make her year enjoyable and successful.
The ladies Autumn Cups last week were won by Bridie McGarry and Mary Norton with a score of 74.5. Both ladies are showing good form ahead of the Finn Trophy final and the ladies senior foursomes final this week. Bridie and Mary play together on the Finn team. They are also part of the ladies senior foursomes team.
The Ladies Finn Trophy team play Waterford Castle in the final in Courtown golf club this Thursday (1.30pm). The team is Mary Leahy Browne (3) and Liz Kinsella (12), Orla Dunphy (4) and Phyl Doyle (12), Bridie McGarry (8) and Mary Norton (11), Mags Cuddihy (9) and Anne Widger (21) and Joan Cody (14) and Liz Cleere (16).
The reserves are Ella Dunphy (17) and Catherine King (18). The team is managed by Catherine King and Greta Nicholson. A bus will leave the club at 12 noo. Anyone who wishes to travel are requested to place their names on the sheet posted on the ladies notice board.
The ladies senior foursomes team are in Enniscorthy on Saturday. They play New Ross in the final at 9am. Kilkenny player Mary Dowling, who is also a member of New Ross golf club, will be opposing her Kilkenny colleagues in this intriguing encounter.
Managers Eithne and Anne Murphy have chosen the following pairs - Mary Leahy Browne (3) and Mary Norton (11), Eileen Rose Power (1) and Breda Roche (15) and Bridie McGarry (8) and Mags Cuddihy (9). The reserves are Orla Dunphy (4) and Joan Cody (14).
Congratulations to Jo Lawlor (13) and Dervilla O’Byrne (22) who were runners up in the Australian Spoons regional final played in Roscrea on Monday.
The Open husband and wife Scotch foursomes, sponsored by Nolan jewellers, The Arcade, will be played on Sunday. There will be an Open ladies and gents singles on Wednesday, September 5.
The senior ladies competition last Thursday was won by Angela Keoghan, Breda Kavanagh and Helen Tynan with 32 points. Two other teams, Toni Hayes, Kathleen Price, Barbara Schofield and Patti Burke, Anne Gubbins and Paula Kavanagh also returned 32 points. The senior ladies competition this week is on today (Wednesday) at 10am and not the normal Thursday.
The senior men’s competition was won by Ken Kinsella (14), Richie McEvoy (16), Martin Treacy (21), Reay Brandon (22) with 65 points. They had four to spare from two teams on 61 points. The seniors will be playing on Wednesday this week instead of the normal Thursday. They have an away outing in Borris on Monday, September 3.
MATCHPLAY: The men’s singles reached the semi-final stage. Nigel Skehan (13) will play Gavin Lonergan (7) and Maurice Ryan (13) will play John Martin (13). The semis will be played on Saturday (2pm).
In the quarter-finals Nigel Skehan defeated Nicky Cashin, John Martin defeated Pat Butler, Gavin Lonergan defeated Colm Sheenan and Maurice Ryan defeated Jack Troy.
In the mixed foursomes semi-final, Kieran Wall and Helen Butler defeated Colin Furlong and Ann Kelly. They play the winners of the Sean Boland and Bridie McGarry and Owen Phelan and Joan Cody match in the final.
The men’s fourball final will be contested between Alan Byrne and Vinny Hayes and Ray Lonergan and Gavin Lonergan.
The men’s foursomes semi-finals will be contested between Fergal Cantwell and Niall O’Gorman and Luke Kelly and Tony McCarthy on one side and between Jack Troy and Larry Gittens and Owen Phelan and Jack McNamara on the other.
Club finals day is Saturday, September 8.
