The following are the notes from golf clubs around Kilkenny this week:

The winners of the Golfer of the Year competitions in Mount Juliet may have been known for some time at Mount Juliet GC, but with the final placings announced their coronations have been confirmed.

The winner of the ladies section was Ruth Mulholland, who built up an almost unassailable lead before the last competitions were played for. Playing very consistently throughout the year, her handicap was reduced to single figures as a result. Ruth scored a total of 60pts from her best six cards and was 18 points clear of Helen Walsh, who finished a point clear of last year’s winner, Brenda O’Sullivan. Geraldine Higgins was a point further back in fourth place.

The men’s section was dominated by P.J. Aylward, who scored 47 points for victory. He was 15 points clear of second placed, Mark Magnier, with Graham Robinson a point further back in 3rd place and Bill Fanning filling 4th place.

The presentation of the Golfer of the Year trophies and the McCalmont Cup matchplay prizes will be performed at a members social on Saturday at 7.30pm in the clubhouse.

CAPTAINS - On Sunday a team of men representing the Captain will take on a ladies team representing the Lady Captain over 18 holes singles. A timesheet is in operation for this competition, which should be a fun day for all golfers participating.

TOP GOLFER - Junior Captain Luke Donnelly won the regional final of the Top Golfer tournament, which was held in Conkerwood GC recently. Luke now progresses to the grand final, which will be held in The Heritage GC shortly. Luke qualified for this competition by winning the Junior Scratch Cup in the Summer with a level par round of golf.

LADIES - The October Ladies Invitation Day was a big success with proceeds going to the Marie Keating Foundation. The format was a Waltz competition with the best score taken at the first hole, the best two scores at the second and all three scores at the third. The format was repeated at each three holes hence the “Waltz” musical format.

This was a Pink Ribbon Day and the ladies really turned out for the occasion, with the Cathy Hoyne-led team coming out winners on a countback from the Claire O’Donoghue trio. Cathy had the honour of scoring a hole in one at the 14th which secured her team a further five points and had a big bearing on the overall result.

Such was the competitive edge that there was only two points dividing the first four teams in the overall standings.

Playing in tough conditions, John Hession (Mount Juliet) captured the main prize with a solid 42pts. The weather was in stark contrast to what had become the norm during the season after a fabulous Summer for golf but John’s golf sparkled on a wet and windy day.
