The winners on a count back of the three person team event played at Kilkenny golf club on Sunday were Jim White (9), Alan Byrne (9), Vinny Hayes (11) with 90 points. Jim continued his good from of Saturday and recorded three birdies on the 2nd, 7th and 14th.

Alan had a birdie on the 14th and Vinny one on the 6th. They were only two over par gross for the 36 entries on the card.

Second on 90 points, and pipped on the back nine, were Joe O’Shea (12), Ciaran Aylmer (16) and Michael Egan, jnr (13). They turned with a great score of 47 points and added 43 on the back nine. They only took three points on the 18th which proved costly.

Third were Gus Carey (13), Niall Sheehan (16) and Steve McCormack (20) on 89 points with a split of 46 and 43. Fourth went to Tony Butler (12), Stephen Sheenan (11) and Seamus Rochford (12) with 88 points.

The Saturday men’s Crosscard competition was a four person team event over 14 holes. The winners were Liam Cody (12), Alan Snype (20), Jim White (9) and Dick Cogan (21) with 70 points. Jim White was in great from. He carded a 3 and nine 4s’. Liam Cody parred the last four holes to give them a strong finish.

DINNER DANCE - Captains Sheila Brennan and Luke Kelly will hold their joint Captains dinner in the club on Saturday, November 23. The sheet for names will be posted in the clubhouse this week.

SNOOKER: The sheet for the list of names for the snooker doubles is posted on the men’s notice board. The draw will be this week. Entry cossts €12. Place names on sheet and the entry fee of €12 in an envelope behind the bar.

CROSSCARD: The men’s Saturday crosscard will continue this Saturday. Check in by 1.15 for shotgun start at 1.30pm. Sunday and Monday will be a four person team event. It will be semi open which means a member may invite guests to play.

GOLFER OF YEAR: This will be sponsored by the Honda Centre, Kilkenny. A new formula has been drawn up. Captain Luke Kelly has undertaken the task of reforming and running Golfer of the Year for 2014. The top 20 in qualifying competitions will receive points, depending on how many shots they are behind the runner-up.

The winner will receive 15 points; the runner-up 12 points. Any competition lost to the weather and not run before club finals day will be null and void. Some of the competitions, including the Captains and Presidents prize will receive extra points with the winner receiving 20 points. The runner-up and ties will receive 15 points and the top 20 will also receive points.

The winner of the club singles matchplay will receive 20 points, the runner-up 15 points; semi-finalists 10 and quarter-finalists five.

The list will be updated after each competition.

PLACING: From Saturday placing will be in play everywhere on the course, except in hazards. The ball must be marked before lifting and replaced within six inches, not nearer the hole.

National glory came to New Ross GC when the club’s 3Ts team delivered at the K Club in style last week.

Having battled through the regional qualifier at Dundrum House last month, the team of Captain Seamus McGuinness, James Roche (club professional), Joey Furness, Maria Burford and Davy Doran recorded an excellent 86pt total on the Ryder Cup Palmer course to beat Clontarf GC by two points. The New Ross team will travel to Spain in early November to compete at La Cala Mijas.

SINGLES - Despite the weather the course was in fine condition for the club singles competition at the weekend. Seamus Phelan (13) finished first with 40pts, one clear of Patrick Fitzpatrick (15) in second place, with Noel Dunne (18) third on countback. Ronán Whelan won the gross prize with 32pts with category prizes going to Mark O’Mahony (7, 37pts), Kieran McGrath (14, 38pts) and Tom Murphy (18, 38pts).

The October open singles was won by William Naddy (21) with 41pts. Category prizes went to Jim Kirwan (18), 37pts; Ted Harrington (11), 41pts and Seamus Bradley (23), 41pts).

FOURBALL - The last Tuesday fourball of the year went to Tommy & Frankie Morrissey (24pts). Brendan Duffin & Noel Dunne were second on 23pts.

A number of nine-hole betterball fourballs for turkeys will be held over the coming weeks. Golfers can play any day of the week, but must enter their names in the book before playing. Further info from the pro shop.

WINTER - The first round of the Winter League is fast approaching. Prepaid entries for the five rounds, costing €25, are now being taken - names on an envelope, with entry fee enclosed, must be put it in the men’s competition box. The draw for tee times is on October 28.

LADIES - Results, ladies 14-hole competition, October 16: 1 Mary Furlong (33), 30pts; 2 Breda McManus (22), 28pts; 3 Jacqui Morgan (13), 26pts.

SENIORS - The seniors made their annual visit to Faithlegg GC recently, combining with the locals to play an 18-hole competition. The three-person team of Dan Quigley (17), Michael Long (21) and John McDonald (22) brought in an unbeatable 96pt total. Second place went to Martin Cahill (18), Seamus Bradley (24), (New Ross) and Sean Hayes (22) and Bob Baker (27) from Faithlegg.

The seniors will have their regular home outing tomorrow (Thursday). Draw for teams is at 10.40am.
