MATT Ruth returned a massive 43 points to win the Gents section of the Open Ladies & Gents Singles on St Patrick’s Day.
Playing off 15 handicap Matt was out in 40 strokes and back in 39 for a 79 gross which gave him 43 points. He had ten pars and eight bogies for a very consistent card. Second place went to Mountain View member Anthony White (10) with 40 points.
Ray Lonergan (3) was third also with 40pts. Ray shot one under par 70 gross. He was out in 32 strokes with birdies on the first, fifth, eighth and ninth and came home in 38 shots with a further birdie on the 17th. The gross was won by Kieran Wall (5) with 30 gross points.
The Ladies section was won by Niamh Kelly (11) on 38 points with Joan Cody (18) in second place on 36 points. THREE-PERSON - The Paddy Raggett Homes sponsored three-person team event, which was held over Saturday and Sunday, was won by Pat Butler (7), Maurice Ryan (13) and Richie Hogan (13, Mountain View) with 85 points. They had a split of 42 on the front and 43 on the back nine and this was good enough to edge out two other teams on the countback.
Maurice and Richie both birdied the ninth hole for eight points but it was Pat who contributed most to the card. He had four birdies and eight pars on the card, covering the back nine in level par 35 to contribute 22 points of their total of 43 on the back nine.
In second place, beaten on the back nine were Anthony Cleere (6) Paul Cleere (7) and M. O’Donnell (15, Castlecomer). The Cleere brothers had seven birdies between them but the team only managed three points on the 18th, which proved to be their downfall. Third place went to the sponsor’s team of Paddy Raggett (15), Michael Raggett (12) and Derek Shelley (9) also on 85 points.
WINNERS - Catherine O’Neill (29) won Tuesday’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition with 38 points. Catherine beat Mary Gorman (30) on the back nine to land the spoils. Mary Leahy Browne (3) secured the gross with 26 gross points.
