Young stars shine on course

YOUTH won the day as 17-year-old year old Nicholas Walsh won the Men’s Singles Stroke competition on Sunday.

YOUTH won the day as 17-year-old year old Nicholas Walsh won the Men’s Singles Stroke competition on Sunday.

The teenager, who hails from Woodsgift, played excellently to finish with a nett score of 66 shots in the competition, which was sponsored by MP Solar Systems. Nicholas is a very promising golfer and, playing off nine, is an outstanding prospect.

Nicholas and his older bother Stephen (Junior Captain 2011) are both products of Sean Walzer’s junior section which has produced an ever growing number of single figure golfers. Nicholas is sure to improve as his distance off the tee will be even more impressive this season. He will be a huge addition to any inter-club teams also having gained Jimmy Breun experience last year.

Another product of Callan’s underage structure is Ryan O’Dwyer who had the lowest gross round of the day, taking just 73 shots when completing the course. Dick Walsh was second with 68, followed by 2009 Captain Richie Cuddihy, who produced a solid score of 69.

LOTTO - Callan GC will hold the first draw in its newly-launched lotto on Thursday, March 31. All members are invited to support the lotto, which will raise valuable funding for the club. All members are asked to support the lotto.

COACHING - The numbers of beginners enjoying Michael O’Shea’s coaching session on Saturdays has now swelled to over 30 golfers. Under Michael’s tutelage the group has enjoyed what has been a very successful exercise.

The group is almost ready to take to the fairways now. The next session takes place on the practice ground on Saturday, April 2 before culminating with a six hole competition on Saturday, April 9.

Sheela Foster, Ladies vice-captain, has been at the helm of the committee who organised these sessions. She invited anyone willing to help to come along on the two remaining Saturdays in April.

OPEN SINGLES - After a frosty start on Wednesday Callan members dominated this week’s competition in the Open Singles series. Willie Hartley produced a solid round of golf, producing 40 points playing off 11. In a great start to his year Willie needed a strong finish to beat Ryan O’Dwyer’s solid 39 points.

The best gross was won for the second week running by Richie Condon, who had 33 gross points. Richie has made a very bright start to the year. The visitors’ prize was won by Sean Foley (Mountain View).

The series continues every Wednesday until the Autumn. Willie, Ryan, Richie and Sean will be invited back to play in the final on a date to be arranged. An early bird option is available for visitors before 12 noon. Members will be charged E7 to play at any stage during Wednesdays.

ST PATRICK’S DAY - A field of close to 100 golfers played in the Open two person team event on St Patrick’s Day. Callan members Helena McCormack and Catherine Dore combined excellently to win the event narrowly from Sean Brett and John O’Dwyer. Alan Foxe and Ned Waters (both visitors) took third in this very successful event.

COURSE CLOSURE - The course will be closed on tomorrow (Thursday) in order to hollow core the greens. This process aerates the green to stimulate root growth, ensuring better drainage and ultimately better putting surfaces.

Course manager Sean Brett is confident that the greens will quickly return to the surface which they have been all Spring. The weather has been kind but thanks to the green staff they have putted better than ever before this early in the year.

Members might have noticed some trees marked on the course. Theses trees will be removed over the next few weeks. This is to allow better trees to develop and this work has been undertaken in conjunction with Coillte.

FOURBALL - The last 32 pairs left in this year’s men’s fourball matchplay competition will be decided this weekend.

Any pair not involved in a preliminary round will need to play their first round matches by Monday, April 4. There will be no extensions granted to this date in order to ensure the smooth running of this year’s event.

Last year’s victorious pairing of Jim Kirby and John Healy will open their defence with a tricky match against the winners of the preliminary round between Joe Cuddihy/Paul Roche and Robert Woodcock (Captain)/Murty O’Halloran.
