CALLAN golf club opened its doors to visiting and resident golfers alike for its annual Open Week. This year it was earlier in the calendar than normal and it proved to be a successful move.

Despite the weather being colder than is seasonal large crowds took to the fairways. The course stood up to the traffic very well and was the subject of lots of compliments from visiting golfers. One of the biggest attractions was the continuing singles series (sponsored by Springhill Hotel and Citroen Centre) on Wednesdays’ which this week was won by Tipperary hurling legend John Leahy with a fine score of 41 points.

The morning had proved quite cold and wet but the evening was nice and the scoring improved later in the day in tandem with the temperature. John produced an excellent back nine to beat the consistent scoring of Paul Madigan on a count back. Nigel O’Donovan also played consistently to capture the best gross while Robert Kennington, Carrick won the visitors prize with a fine score of 40 points.

All those prizewinners also qualify for the autumn final.

Despite the weather ladies day was, as is traditional, the busiest day of the week. Local golfers Evelyn Bookle, Noelle O’Driscoll and Breda Ryan played excellently in the rain to win this Open Rumble (sponsored by the Pennyfeather Restaurant and Lavender Spa) followed in second by Helen Dunne, Bernie Walsh and Mary Barry with Marion and Maura O’Mahony and Kathleen Phelan narrowly third.

The week opened with a two person team event (sponsored by Strathmore Lodge and Madigans Pharmacy) when David and Jacinta Culleton had an excellent 48 points which saw them one clear of Martin Glendon and Helena McCormack. Tuesday was a singles competition with Moira Mcdonald having an excellent round to beat Paul Madigan and Celine Egan with Tommy Manogue and Bernie Madigan picking up the best gross prizes in their categories.

Friday’s champagne scramble (sponsored by Modern Printers and Dohenys Bins) proved a popular draw with the large entry resulting in victory for Tommy Maher, Teresa O Neill, Helena McCormack and Breda Walsh with an excellent total of 105 points with the team of Michael Comerford, Daniel Mcgrath, Pat Malone and Thomas Comerford second with a score of 101 points while John Butler, John Kirwan and two Mountain View members, Jimmy Foster and Derek Ralph in third with 100 points.

Saturday’s Mens Fourball (sponsored by Callan Co-op and Unecol Oil) was very well supported also and two visitors played superbly to claim first prize. Nicky Butler and John Dowling from Carrick on Suir had a brilliant 45 points with locals Brian Doheny and Willie Hartley 3 points less in second.

Finally, Sunday’s team event (sponsored by John Walsh and Halligans Garage) was won by a team of ladies from Callan. Evelyn Bookle, Breda Ryan and Helena McCormack all won prizes for the second time this week but on this occassion they were ably assisted by Jo Staunton. The ladies had a superb week and proved its an excellent time to strike form with events coming thick and fast.

Open week 2011 was a great success with thanks given to all who made it such a good week often in adverse weather.
