Captains’ lead fun on good night out

Sheila Brennan and Luke Kelly had a successful night at their joint Captains’ dinner in Kilkenny golf club on Saturday night. Nearly 170 members and friends attended the dinner which was served by up Barry Joyce and his staff.

Everything went like clockwork and the guests were fulsome in their praise for the meal and the night. The Captains’ Sheila and Luke made very witty speeches and thanked their families, committees and staff of the club for all their help.

The men’s December hamper scotch foursomes was played over the weekend. Saturday was lost to the frost. The sheet went ahead on Sunday and the winners with 35 points were Ian Harrison (15) and Tom Keating (28), with the best of the 35 scores. They had a strong finish with pars on the closing three holes which gave them 10 points. They won on the last three from two other partnerships.

Billy Burke (8) and Ger Carey (13) were second. They were only one over par gross for the 14 holes but lost out on the count back. They had a birdie on the 16th and dropped shots on the 6th and 13th. Third with the last of the 35s’ were Mark Shortall (8) and Paul Short (19).

Fourth went to Jim Ryan (14) and Michal Butler (15) with 34 points. Fifth were Kevin Lenihan (15) and John Lawlor (17), also with 34 points.

The cross card this Saturday is at 1pm. The latest time for signing in 12.45pm. Members should ’phone in before 12.45pm to check their name is in or if they are delayed.

The ladies competition last week was won by Mary Bradshaw (19) 18 points. Second was Margaret McCreery (19) on 17 points. Third and fourth were Toni Hayes (21) and Joan Cody (13) on 17 points.

The ladies will have slots on Saturdays’ as well as Sundays’ for their competitions over the coming months. The slots are bookable online and are open to all categories of membership, including juniors and juveniles who hold a full adult handicap.

The senior men’s competition last week was won by Tom Gunning (15), Peter Dabinet (19), Nicky Lawlor (21) and Joe Ledwidge (24) with 66 points. They won comfortably by eight points.

The winners had five six pointers and nothing less than four points on the card. The runners-up 58 points were Willie Leahy (13), Paddy Gubbins (17), Shem Lawlor (22) and Maurice Ryan (21). Third were Eddie Guilfoyle (14), Paddy Raggett (15), Michael O’Neill (23) and Eamon Molloy (26).

The senior ladies last Thursday played for Lady President Toni Haye’s prize. The winner was Brid White with 19 points. The team event produced four scores of 34 points. The best of these on the breakdown were Mary Gorman, Aileen Hehir and Ann Gunning. Second were Brid White, Sheila Brennan and Pauline O’Sullivan.

CHRISTMAS MIXED: The Christmas mixed will be on Sunday, December 8 with a shotgun start at 12 noon. The competition is being sponsored by James Walsh, Walsh Motors Toyota dealers. The sheet for names is inside the bar door. The draw for teams will be on Saturday, December 7 (6pm).

MEMBERSHIP: There are a number of vacancies open for ladies and gents in the club. Applicants who join now can enjoy the benefit of two months free membership as their fees will cover them until their subscription becomes due for renewal in 2015. PITCHMARKS: The greens are in great shape at the moment, but it is disappointing to see so many unrepaired pitch marks undoing the great work of the greens staff. Members take note, please.

SNOOKER: The first round of the snooker doubles was due to be completed by November 25. There are still two matches outstanding. The second round is due to be played by Friday, December 13.

SERVICE: The annual memorial service for deceased members will be this evening (Wednesday) at 8pm in the club. All members and relatives of the deceased are welcome. The list of deceased members and former members for 2013 is - Sean Davin, Etta Shine, Caomhin Fahy, Milo Grogan, Paddy Holland, Eileen Kelly, Tom McDonald, J.D. Murphy and Donal O’Brien.

BRIDGE: The Bridge lessons will continue on Monday at 7.45pm in the club.

PLACING: Placing is in play everywhere on the course, except in hazards. The ball must be marked before lifting and replaced within six inches, not nearer the hole.

Mountain View

The top three positions in each category were decided in the sixth and final round of the Winter League at Mountain View GC at the weekend.

Colm Hayes took the Category One spoils with 63pts, with Eddie Walsh second on 45pts and Kevin Kelly third with 22pts. Despite not playing at the weekend, Nicky Byrne topped the Category Two table with 24pts, followed closely by Tommy Coyne in second place on 21pts and David Fitzpatrick with 18pts. Joe Earle won Category three with 54pts, followed closely by Philip Parsons on 46pts. J.J. Holohan was third with 23pts.

Prizes will be presented after the Christmas Scramble this weekend.

SCRAMBLE - All members playing in the Christmas Scramble on Sunday must be registered by 5pm Thursday.
