REVIEW - The past year was a memorable one for the golfers of Callan GC.
On the home front Martin Prendergast took Paul Cashin’s Captain’s Prize in September, securing his maiden ‘major’ in style. Marty Parker won his second President’s Prize in three years, mastering a big field to claim John Kinchella’s award.
In the opening days of the summer Niall O’Sullivan claimed his second Junior Scratch Trophy, narrowly pipping Paul Norris, while the Intermediate Scratch went to Denis Carey. Former junior member John Hession won the season-long O’Dwyer Golf Stores Open Singles Series.
On the inter-club front the Pierce Purcell team, led by Paul Cashin, reached the Leinster final where home advantage saw their opponents Corrstown prevail. With next season’s regional qualifier to be held in Geraldine hopes are high the locals can go one better in 2014. Elsewhere an excellent Kilkenny side beat the club’s Provincial Towns side while the South Leinster team, under Paddy Donovan’s watch, showed much potential in the early rounds before an away draw derailed the effort. Barton Cup defeat was relatively swift, while the Jimmy Bruen side failed to gain momentum in Castlecomer.
Competitions and golf in general suffered a blow when a sharp frost made its first appearance of the year at Mount Juliet GC.
The club is now back in full swing as the milder weather has returned.
HAMPERS - The last of the Christmas hampers was held in the form of the member/guest 16-hole fourball better ball competition. The winners were Sean Brett and his guest Brian Duggan, who returned a fine 42pts to edge out their nearest rivals, Jim Cusack and Dan Cronin, by a shot. In third place, a shot further back, were John O’Connor and Annette Duignan.
The winners were four under par gross for their 16 holes, with Brian Duggan contributing three birdies at the fifth, 11th and 15th holes. Sean Brett added to the birdie tally with another at the difficult 13th. This gave them an opening nine holes of 23pts. They completed the remaining seven holes (10th to 16th) with a further 19pts to compile a fine winning score without dropping a shot to par.
The runners-up turned with 24pts but dropped shots to par at the 12th, 13th and 16th holes, something which cost them first prize on the day.
