Third time’s a charm for Finn team!

THE Finn Trophy were out against Waterford Castle on Wednesday at Gowran Park against Waterford Castle.

THE Finn Trophy were out against Waterford Castle on Wednesday at Gowran Park against Waterford Castle.

It proved to be third time lucky as, on Gowran’s third attempt, the club team managed to get past the first round and beat Waterford Castle comprehensively.

The team featured: Niamh Connolly & Deirdre McCabe, Sinead Kearney & Karen Haughney, Ann Mullins & Ger Hickey, Breda Bolger & Catherine O’Connor and Nora Barron & Helen Dunne.

LEINSTER - The club’s South Leinster team bowed out of the 2011 competition in a close-fought first round match against defending champions Dunmurray Springs, who had the advantage of a home draw.

At home good results from the Gowran Park team of Pat Staunton (won 4&3), Liam Hutchinson (won 4&3) and Tom Dack (lost 4&3) gave the locals a good chance of causing an upset.

The away team had it all to do in very windy conditions. Aidan Grogan lipped out on the 18th to lose one down. James Fitzgerald was one up standing on the 18th, while James Fisher and Tommy Bolger were both beaten 3&2.

Team managers Melvyn Kennedy and John Barcoe thanked all involved for their efforts.

RESULTS - Results, Ladies 18 hole singles, May 8: 1 Kathryn Murphy (26), 33pts.

Results, Open singles, May 5: 1 Sylvia Tormey (Mullingar), 36pts; 2 Liam O’Dwyer (Gowran Park), 35pts.

DIARY - Friday: Open Singles (changed from Thursday due to scheduled race meeting). Sunday: Open Fourball (timesheet 056-7726699).

LADIES - Match results for the Minor Team v New Ross and Intermediate Team v Castlecomer matches, which were played on May 9, are available online.

This week’s competition is the Australian Spoons. Participants are asked to ensure they have a playing partner and opposition organised.

MATCHPLAY - The closing date for entry into the Club Singles and Club Fourball Matchplay competitions is today (Wednesday). Entry fee is E10 per person for each competition.

CHANGES - Owing to the Breeze-Up on Thursday, May 19 the following changes are necessary: the members weekly nine-hole will be held on Tuesday, May 17.

The tee will not be available for 18 holes after 12.30pm on May 18 or 19.
