IN NEAR perfect conditions, a smaller field than usual (14 teams) teed off on Thursday in the New Ross seniors weekly outing. The game was won and lost on the fast greens. Only three teams beat the target score of 90 points.
With a wonderful front nine, where they gathered 51 points, John Hanrahan (16), Hughie O’Connor (17), Mick Logue (19) and Paddy Browne (23) added 46 on the tougher back nine to emerge clear winners with 97 points. Second on 92 points were Eddie Keher (8), Dick Cahill (20), Tom Kent (21) and Jamesie Murphy (21).
Third were Jim Furlong (15), John Murphy (15), Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (20) and Brian Dolan (23) on 91 points. Here, however, lies the story behind the headlines.
This quartet reached the turn with an incredible 54 points and seemed set for a record score. They faltered badly on the home run only garnering 37 points.
There was no nearest the pin winners as no one put out the tapes. Meanwhile, best wishes for a speedy recovery goes to John Vereker after a recent hip operation.
On a different theme, another one of the group, Kevin Treacy, is thrilled with the reaction to his shell display at the JFK Arboretum. The viewing of the vast collection of exotic shells from the oceans and seas of the world, which is well worth a visit, has now been extended and will continue for the rest of July and August.
Meanwhile, the results from the four man scramble in New Ross on Friday were - 1 (55.6) R. Farrell (1), D. Ronan (16), C. Farrell (12), M. Ryan (5); 2 (55.7) T. O’Connor (14), E. Delaney (18), Jim Howlin (11), T. Liston (10); 3 (55.7) P. Cashin (7), N. Cashin (6), K. Bolger (12), C. Bolger (8).
