GOLFERS interested in joining the club are invited to experience the introductory membership programme at Gowran Park GC over the weekend.
The programme will coincide with two open competitions, the open singles tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday, together with an open fourball on Sunday (sponsored by Farrell Foods). Entry fee for these competitions is E10 per person.
This is an opportunity for prospective members to come and experience the course and enjoy the facilities. Timesheet details for both competitions are available from 056-7726699.
SENIORS - Local golfers Bill Deverill and Liam O’Dwyer took the top spots in the senior open singles competition at the club recently. Both scored 37 points, but Bill won out on a countback on the back nine. The next seniors open will be held on Tuesday, October 9.
SINGLES - A great break in the weather together with golfers enthusiastic as ever saw a record entry for the weekly open singles competition.
Young Gowran Park member John Lannon, playing off 21, continued his consistent form recently and took victory with a score of 39 points. Carrick-on-Suir member John O’Reilly (14) took the runners-up spot with the same score as John, but lost out on the countback.
The members’ 18 hole singles competition was held at the weekend. John Lannon, now playing off 19, continued his winning ways by winning from Mick Lane (10).
John secured victory with a good score of 40 points. Mick scored 38 points on the day.
MATCHPLAY - The members’ club matchplay competitions are reaching the final stages.
In the singles matchplay the final is between Ned Nolan, who beat Joe Lannon in the semi-final and Niall Treacy, who beat Lee Graham in the other semi-final.
In the fourball matchplay Ger Treacy and Martin Donnelly have reached the final after seeing off Kieran Mahon and Michael Comerford in the semi-final. Ger and Martin are now waiting on the opposite semi-final to find out who they’ll face in the final. Thos Farrell and Kevin Fennelly are scheduled to take on father and son pairing of Paudie and Brian Lannon for a place in the decider.
CHALLENGE - The club hosted the Inter-Society Challenge recently. Six societies comprising of 12 players took to the course for a competitive day’s golf.
Bennettsbridge Golf Society took the honours this year, edging Goresbridge into second place. Other societies who played on the day were from Thomastown, Stoneyford, Graignamanagh and Ballyhale.
