KILKENNY clubs were well represented at the Leinster juvenile track and field championships, which were held at the Tullamore Harriers track over the weekend.

Athletes from Castlecomer, Gowran, Thomastown, St Joseph’s, St Senan’s and Kilkenny City Harriers (KCH) put in some brilliant performances at the Offaly venue, returning home with plenty of medals and places booked in the national finals.

The top four athletes in each event qualified for the All-Irelands, which will be held in Tullamore on July 6 and 7, finals which provide sterner test for all competing.

There were some standout performances over the weekend. A number of athletes achieved personal bests while three recorded championship best performances.

St Joseph’s athlete Shannen Dawkins came home with four gold medals, winning the girls’ under-18 high jump, 200m, 400m hurdles and 200m hurdles. She also set two new personal bests and a championship best performance (CBP) in the hurdles.

Gowran’s Donagh Mahon also had a championship best performance, achieving a jump of 1.9m in the boys’ under-18 high jump. Ciara Deeley (KCH) got the third CBP when she cleared 1.55m in the girls’ under-14 high jump.

The county’s young sprinters were to the fore. Jack Elliott (St Joseph’s) claimed silver in the boys’ under-13 80m final. There was some extra drama in the boys’ under-14 80m as Gowran’s David Murphy won gold on the line by a margin of .02 seconds.

There were more medals in the inter-county relays, which were held in conjunction with the club events. Kilkenny teams won gold in the boys’ under-17 event and silver in the girls’ under-19 event.
