The annual meeting of the Joint Club of Kilkenny GC was held in front of a large attendance on Thursday last.
The meeting, which was attended by 210 members, lasted for more than two hours as all the events surrounding the club were discussed.
Conducted by president Aidan McDonald, the meeting heard a detailed report on the club’s finances from outgoing treasurer Cathal Smyth. There were many contributions from the floor, with everyone who wished to have their say accommodated.
The chairman of the Joint Committee for 2014 will be captain of the men’s club, Denis Brophy. Also elected were: vice-chair lady captain Catherine King, secretary P.J. O’Reilly, treasurer Seamus Rochford, ex officio Luke Kelly and Sheila Brennan. Vice-captain of the men’s club Liam Cody, vice-captain of the ladies club Joan Cashin and nine other members were elected from the floor at the meeting: Billy Burke, Helen Butler, Leo Byrne, Joan Cody, Ollie Cullen, Frank Dalton jnr, Michael Grant, Brendan Hogan and Rob O’Shea.
With all committees now in place the first meetings will be held over the coming days. The ladies committee will meet this evening (Wednesday) at 7.30pm and the men’s committee on Monday at 8pm, with a joint committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 21 at 7pm. The various sub committees will be announced in the coming week.
WEATHER - While the men’s cross card competition was cancelled due to frost on Saturday Sunday’s competition went ahead, even though the weather was not very conducive.
Owing to the conditions scoring was difficult, but Pat Butler emerged as winner with 29pts. Playing off four, Pat was two over par after five holes but covered the last 10 holes in level par. In second place was Pat Collins (11) with 28pts while third place went to Pat Butler jnr (10) with 27pts.
Eddie Power (scr) won the gross with 25 gross points. The final nett prize went to Eugene Coyne (18) with 25pts. There were only three winners in the two’s club and they each received €45 credited to their accounts in the pro shop.
The presentation of prizes will be held in February, with the date to be confirmed.
SENIORS - The annual meeting of the Senior men’s club will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 4.30pm. If, for weather reasons, there is no golf on Thursday the annual meeting will be postponed until Thursday, January 23.
The Senior Ladies will also have their annual meeting tomorrow (Thursday) at 2pm. The meeting will go ahead, even if there is no golf due to weather.
COURSE ETIQUETTE - The mats in place on the par threes are to be used during the week to help preserve the tee boxes. Members should also note that caddy cars and trolleys are not to be brought inside the ropes surrounding the greens - these ropes are in place to protect the surrounds of the greens.
Players are requested to refrain from scooping the ball out of the holes with their putters and damaging the collars. All players should remind their playing partners to comply with these rules.
Members are also requested to continue repairing pitch marks and divots. The course staff have commenced work on reshaping some of the bunkers and regrading the faces of others. As a result some holes may be closed over the coming weeks to accommodate these works.
WINTER SPECIAL - The golf Winter special, of a green fee plus hot plate of the day with tea/coffee for €35, is available until March 31.
SNOOKER - The final of the snooker doubles tournament was held last week. The tournament was won by Nick O’Donnell & Johnny McEvoy, who beat Christy Power & Michael O’Neill 2-0.
The entry sheet for the snooker singles tournament has been posted on the men’s noticeboard. The draw will be made on Friday. Entry fee is €5 per player. Players are asked to enter names on the sheet and leave the entry fee in the envelope behind the bar.
BRIDGE LESSONS - Bridge lessons have now resumed at the club, with 37 players attending. Lessons will continue on Monday at 7.45pm.
YOGA - Ladies yoga lessons will resume today (Wednesday) in the club at 10.30am.
PLACING - Placing is in play everywhere on the course, except in hazards. The ball must be marked before lifting and replaced within six inches not nearer the hole.
Relief may also be obtained from the drainage tracks on the seventh, ninth and 11th holes at the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole. Ropes and stanchions are immovable obstructions and cannot be interfered with; relief may be obtained nearest point of relief not nearer the hole.

The golfing year will get into full swing when Mountain View GC begins its open series competition on Monday.
The event, a single stableford which will run every week from Monday to Sunday, starts on January 20. The winner from each week will go into the grand final, which will be held on Saturday, April 19.
Every golfer who reaches the final will receive an individual prize and be entered into a draw for six months membership of Mountain View.
The overall winner will receive an Apple iPad and six months membership at the club.
Entry fee is €15 for visitors and €5 for members. Re-entries are permitted in the same week.
WEATHER - Owing to poor weather conditions, the members’ competitions were cancelled over the last two weekends.
Last week’s scheduled three-person scramble has now been pencilled in for this weekend. Names must be on the timesheet by 1pm on Friday.
MEMBERSHIP - Members are reminded that membership subscriptions are now due. The new membership rates for 2014 are €399 for full membership and €370 for seniors. There is also a €99 rate (terms and conditions apply). All rates include GUI fee. Further details are available from the golf shop.
LOYALTY CARD - The club’s member/green fee loyalty card scheme will be in operation again for 2014. Members and green fees can receive free a round golf after every five rounds played. Full details are available from the golf shop.
FIXTURES - With the club committee meeting this week, one of the items to be discussed is the list of fixtures for the coming year. The full list of fixtures will be available in the clubhouse and can be viewed on www.mviewgolf.com from next weekend.
