THE JUNIOR section of Callan GC held a very successful Summer Camp last week.
The brainchild of junior officer Joe Cuddihy, vice-captain Sean Walzer and the junior committee, the camp was a big hit as 54 boys and girls were introduced to the basics of golf. All enjoyed the facilities of the club, as well as a trip to Lacken for pitch and putt.
The response from the senior members of the club, who helped facilitate the enjoyment of the week, was fantastic. The week was equally supported by the men and women’s senior committees and guaranteed a warm and welcoming environment for the juniors.
Perhaps the best sign of the healthy state of the club was the response from the junior section itself. Junior captains Laura Woodcock and Stephen Walsh were among those who gave up their time and put huge effort into making the week such a successful one. Other juniors who were so helpful were Andy Needham, Luke Donnelly, Caoimhe Murphy, Nicky Murphy, Cathal Byrne, Conor Murphy, Laura Donnelly, Eliza Walsh, Shaun Donnelly, Aoife Donnelly, Sean Og Walzer, Brian O’Sullivan and David Walzer.
The young people who participated were so enthusiastic and a pleasure to have around with many of the non members pledging to join in the near future.
OPEN SINGLES - There was a strong Castlecomer connection as two more golfers qualified for the Autumn finale of the series. Current Castlecomer club member Gavin Carroll shot an excellent 41 points to narrowly beat Michael Walsh (39 points). Michael was the chef in Castlecomer, as well as a member, before taking over the bar and catering contract in Callan. Gavin and Michael will be joined in the final by Niall O’Sullivan who had 33 points, a good score in less than ideal conditions.
The series continues every Wednesday until the final in Autumn with an early bird option for visitors before noon each week.
MEDAL - The monthly medal competition, sponsored by Signiatic, was held over the weekend. Sean Malone, playing off nine, produced a superb score to complete the course in 65 nett shots.
Sean’s superb round provided the winning score while both James Wellwood and Kevin O’Driscoll produced 67s while playing off 14. James had the better back nine to secure second place. Paul Madigan took the gross prize, with all enhancing their prospects of winning the Golfer of the Year award.
CLUB CLASSIC - This year’s Club Classic will be held from Thursday, September 15 to Sunday, September 18. All members are invited to participate in the event.
Cost of entry to the classic is E80 per team. It is hoped that the classic will draw more than 100 teams like last year’s event, which proved to be an invaluable source of income for the club.
There will be a huge array of prizes from first down to 12th places. There will also be a raffle on the day as well as a Mulligan option on one of the par threes as a novelty.
TEAM EVENT - Callan GC will host an open two person team event on Friday, August 26. Times are available on-line (callangolfclub.com) and on a timesheet in the hall.
