Clarke shoots 62 to win the Spring singles

Bernie Clarke (14) shot a great round of 62 net to win the Spring singles at Kilkenny golf club over the weekend. Bernie shots two halves of 38 in compiling his five over par 76 gross.

He had a slow start with bogies on the first four holes. However, he rectified the situation quickly with three successive birdies on the 5th, 6th and 7th holes. He turned in two over par and covered the back nine in three over par with the help of five pars on the last five holes.

Second on 64 was John Maher (10) with a 64 net. John was four over par turning and covered the back nine in level par. Mark Shortall (7) claimed third place on 66 net. The gross was won by Graham Nugent (1) with a 73 gross.

The ladies competition last week was reduced to 13 holes due to the course only reopening at 12 noon after the hollow coring. The winner was Mary O’Shea (16) with 571/3 net. Dervilla O’Byrne (25) came second on 591/3. The gross was won by Mary Leahy Browne (3) with a 64 gross.

The senior men’s competition on Thursday was won by Tom Gunning (13), Pat O’Shea (18), Kevin Donohue (22), Jim O’Connell (27) with 65 points. All four players contributed well to the card. They had three points to spare from John O’Donovan (17), Michael O’Neill (22), Martin Kelly (24) and Peter McQuillan (24) on 62 points.

The winners of the senior ladies competition were Pat Walsh, Lila Byrne and Mary Feighery with 35 points. Second went to Edith Ogilvie, Aileen Hehir and Phil O’Carroll with 30 points.

FOURSOMES: The entry sheets for the men’s foursomes and mixed foursomes are up on the men’s notice board under the stairs. The entry fee is €12 per pair for each competition. Players are requested to place their names on the sheets and place the appropriate entry fee in the envelopes provided.

ST PATRICK’S NIGHT: There will be a function in the clubhouse on St Patrick’s night. There will be an Irish theme with music and hot food. The hot food will be served after the Ireland versus England rugby match at 7/7.30pm. Music will follow after the food.

Those attending are requested to place their names on the sheet in the bar by Friday. The club needs to know the approximate numbers for caterer Barry Joyce.

SUBSCRIPTIONS: Members are reminded that annual subscriptions should have been paid by Wednesday, February 29. If there has been an omission contact the office.

PRIZE PRESENTATION: Men’s prize presentation on Friday (7pm). Prizes for the following competitions will be presented - the PGA Tankard, March Monthly Medal, Spring singles and the ladies and gents Open singles on February 29.

WINTER GOLF: There is a Winter golf special that runs from Monday to Friday until March 31. Enjoy a round of golf and choice of main course or an all day breakfast plus tea/coffee for €35. Offer will run from Monday to Friday and is subject to availability. Tee time must be booked in advance.

GREENS: The sheet for the adopt a green is now on the notice board under the stairs. the club would request those who have entered their names on the sheet to please commence the task of repairing pitch marks which have been left unrepaired.

The club would request all players to make a special effort to repair pitch marks and rake bunkers properly out of courtesy to their fellow members.

INTER-CLUB: Inter-club competitions are on the verge of kicking in. The Irish mixed foursomes team (5 pairs minimum combined handicap 19) will be in Castlecomer on Saturday, April 14 (4pm). There will be two matches in Kilkenny and three in Castlecomer.

The Barton Cup team (men’s foursomes 5 pairs, minimum combined handicap 14) will be in action against Mountain View on Bank Holiday Monday , April 7 (3.30pm). Kilkenny will have home advantage with three matches and two will be played in Mountain View.

Team Managers P.J. Martin and Brendan Hogan have included three juvenile members among their pairings which are Conor Boland (6) and Emmet Boland (8), Brendan Hogan (4) and Harry Duggan (10), Ronan Kelleher (4) and Mark Power (10), Richard Duggan (1) and Kevin Power (13) and Paul Cleere (7) and Jason Lawlor (7).

SNOOKER: The snooker single semi-finals between Christy Power and Gabriel Maher and Luke Kelly and Martin Hanrick are due to be completed by the weekend.
