Golfers who find a new set of clubs under their tree this Christmas will be able to put them to quick use at Callan GC over the festive period.

The club will host an open 18-hole two person competition (any combination) from St Stephen’s Day up to and including Sunday, December 29. The competition has an array of prizes for each category of players. Entry fee is €10 for visitors, €8 for members.

TURKEY & HAMS - Joe Tierney was the big winner with a fantastic score of 44pts in the latest round of the annual pre-Christmas competitions. Joe took top spot by two points from Michael Kealy (42pts). Stephen Kelly and Paul Cunningham were third and fourth respectively with 41pts to complete the prize-winning.

MEETING - The annual meeting of the men’s section will be held in the clubhouse on Friday, December 13. Nomination forms for officers are available from the office.

WINTER LEAGUE - The Winter League is now up and running. An open event, entry fee is €15 for visitors and their first entry into the league with €12 for second and subsequent entries. Entre fee for members is €6 initially, €4 for subsequent entries.

Open seven days a week, the top five cards of each individual will be combined with the top 50 golfers making the final.

Five days after holding their annual meeting, the seniors of Castlecomer GC will have their Christmas night on Friday. This will be followed by the Joint Captains’ Christmas party, which will held on Saturday night.

The party, which starts at 8pm, will consist of a buffet followed by music by The Irish House Party. Presentations will be made to the Golfers of the Year prizes and club matchplay champions. Tickets are available from both captains or the office.

CHARITY - Captain Eamonn and Lady Captain Marjie held a charity competition recently. The event was a big success, with a cheque for €1,362.50 presented to the Cois Nore cancer support centre in Kilkenny.

MIXED - The final of the club mixed competition was held on Sunday and proved to be a marathon affair as Marjie Gannon (32) and Jason Brennan (4) took on Martin Brennan (13) and Marie Gannon (25).

The competition went all the way to the 22nd hole, where Martin and Marie emerged winners.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the golf club lotto. Numbers drawn were 14, 16, 23, 26. The jackpot now stands at €6,000.

Gowran Park

The Christmas Gala Day and golf outing will take over Gowran Park GC on Saturday, December 14.

The competition will be a team event, with a draw for partners to take place at lunchtime. Prize-giving and social evening will be held after the golf, along with presentation to club fourball and matchplay winners.

TURKEY & HAMS - The final Open Singles competition of the year for turkeys and hams is on Sunday, December 15. A timesheet is now available online or from 056-7726699, with early booking advised.

WINTER LEAGUE - Members enjoyed an 11-hole singles competition, part of the Winter League, over the weekend. Playing off 20, Paddy Mahon secured top spot with 28pts with Patrick Nolan (23) runner-up spot with 27pts on a countback from Mick McKillen (13).

The final round of the League will be held this weekend, with a timesheet in place for Sunday. Mick Dillon remains in top spot on with 84pts, with Thomas Nevin second on 72pts and Conor Bolger third with 61pts.

AUTUMN - Michael Bolger (15) secured top spot in the latest round of the Autumn Series with a score of 39pts. Castlecomer’s Christy Comerford (14) was runner-up with local member Harry Lannon (19) also qualifying for the final.

The last chance to make the series final will be held this Thursday and Friday. The final is scheduled for Friday, December 13.

Mountain View

Sixty members played in the Christmas three-person scramble in ideal conditions at Mountain View GC on Sunday.

T.J. Dowling, Bobby O’Brien and Callum O’Sullivan emerged winners with a tremendous score of 55.9pts. In second place were Richard Murphy, George Barcoe and Noel Doran with a net 57.0.

At the prize-giving captain Jim Dunne thanked all the members and club officials for their support during the year. He also praised Edward Power and his staff for the superb condition of the course.

Prizes were also presented to the Golfer of The Year, club singles winner and runner-up, club doubles winners and runners-up, as well as to winners of all the monthly medals, Champions Cup and Winter League.

MEETING - The annual meeting of Mountain View GC will be held on Tuesday, December 10 at 8pm. All are welcome.

The members of the senior society at New Ross GC held their annual meeting on Thursday.

A large attendance heard Kevin Treacy speak of a very successful season on both the competition and financial fronts. After a discussion it was agreed that New Ross would continue its membership of the Autumn Seniors Alliance, which brought in over €800 to the coffers of the local club following the September fixture.

Following the meeting the seniors took to the course, where forward tees led to some great scores. In number one spot were Denis Kirwan (12), Aidan Kent, (15) Brian Dolan, (20) and Tommy Grennan (21) with 96pts. In second place, one point behind, were John Hosey (12), Michael Gannon (15), John Roche (17) and Dick O’Neill (20). Third place went to Jimmy Furlong (10), Johnny Watson (15), Colin Casey (20), and Michael Long (21) on 94pts. Nearest the pin prize went to Michael Brennan.

The seniors will have their Christmas outing tomorrow (Thursday). There will be extra prizes on offer for the golf, followed by dinner prepared by chef Padraig Murphy. The draw for teams is at 10.40am sharp. Any regular player who has not already booked in can do so on the day, paying €20 for the full package or €10 for the competition.


The annual meeting of the men’s club at Borris GC was held in the clubhouse recently.

Outgoing Captain Shane Foley thanked all his committee for their hard work during the year. He wished incoming Captain Pat Leahy and his committee success for 2014.
