The Duck Derby race on the River Nore in Kilkenny on the Sunday of St Patrick’s weekend was a resounding success for Kilkenny Lions Club.
Over 700 sponsored plastic ducks battled it out on that rainy day, with the first three winning prizes. Two ducks broke away from the main field and led to the finish.
The ducks were launched into the river by Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council Pat Fitzpatrick, President of Kilkenny Lions Club Carmel Slater, Secretary Philip Tierney and PRO Philip O’Neill.
George Candler, chairman of the fundraising event, also acted as MC and race commentator. He thanked all the Lions members who helped with the organisation on the day.
After the race all the ducks were successfully collected from the river by Roger McClure, Kilkenny Aqua Canoe Club, and his young team of canoeists.
George declared the race a great success with the Lions Club giving all proceeds to the Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life Kilkenny.
