The weather gods smiled on cyclists from all over Kilkenny as the Callan Cycling Club held their annual sportive last Sunday morning.
Now in its second year, the event saw a large group of cyclists leave from the John Lockes GAA club grounds in Callan and take on a 40km route through scenic country roads before heading back to the clubhouse for some well-earned refreshments. There was also a 15km option which was a hit with a number of families and younger cyclists.
The day proved to be a hit, as cyclists from across the county pedalled their way into Callan for the event. The club thanked all participants, supporters and sponsors and are already looking forward to hosting next year’s run.
The sportive is the first of a series of events which will grab the attention of local cyclists. This weekend Kilkenny Bike Week gets into gear, with Cycling Ireland and the Co Council teaming up for a series of events and activities suitable for all.
Saturday kicks off with leisure rides exploring the Kilkenny countryside - these will leave from the main gates of Kilkenny Castle at 9.15 and 10am. Sunday sees the return of the Bikefest Family Day which includes the popular Slow Roll, a fun cycle through the city for all wheels, abilities and bikes, leaving County Hall at 12 noon. See
