It was celebration time for the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) as they reopened their Community Centre in Kilkenny after extensive renovation works.
The centre, located at Claddagh Court, had been closed for several months to bring the building up to fire regulation standards.
A special celebration took place recently where members, employees, and special guests came together to mark this important occasion. Mayor of Kilkenny, Joe Malone, joined newly appointed IWA CEO, Ann Marie O’Grady and members Daniel Bradshaw and Marie Kenny to officially open the centre and admire the artwork on display from talented members.
Vital space
The Community Centre at Claddagh Court is a vital space for IWA members to access the many programmes IWA offer including therapies, and learning supports, as well as a place to socialise and have fun with friends. This reopening will benefit current and future members for years to come.
IWA would like to express their gratitude to Pobal for providing essential funding for this project through the Community Centre Investment Fund in conjunction with the Department of Rural & Community Development.
Resilience
Liam Saunders, IWA Area Manager, expressed his joy at giving the building back to the members, acknowledging their patience and resilience during the renovation process.
“Thank you, our members, and to all the staff for adapting to change and taking on the challenge of the past few months with positivity,” he said. “Today, I am giving you back your building.”
John Grace, a valued member attending the centre for many years, shared his happiness at being back in the building that holds so many cherished memories. “I look forward to getting stuck into activities like painting, pottery, music, and drama, as well as preparing for a Boccia tournament in the near future,” he said.
The reopening signifies a new chapter for Irish Wheelchair Association and its members in Kilkenny.
