Stars from all sporting codes followed the road up to Carlow for a charity hurling match on Monday.

The 2024 offering of the Hurling for Cancer match brought over 10,000 people to Netwatch Cullen Park. The event, the brainchild of horse trainer Jim Bolger and jockey Davy Russell, saw the greats of Gaelic games rub shoulders with celebrities from all walks of life in a ‘friendly’ game of hurling!

Kilkenny was well represented in the game, with intercounty hurling and camogie great among the line-ups. Among the players who featured were TJ Reid and Tommy Walsh, with camogie stars Michelle Teehan and Grace Walsh also among those who featured. Former Kilkenny manager Brian Cody was also involved once again, taking charge of Davy Russell’s Best, while Jim Bolger’s Stars were coached by former Wexford boss Liam Griffin and Limerick manager John Kiely.

There were a few surprises along the way too. Former Republic of Ireland international Shane Long played for Bolger’s side, a move which echoed back to the days when he played for the Tipp minor hurlers. Kilkenny TikToker Sean Carroll also featured, while champion trainer Willie Mullins was umpire on the night.

While Bolger’s team prevailed in the game - they were first past the post on an 11-9 to 8-17 scoreline - charity was the real winner. A great amount was raised to help support vital cancer research, added to the impressive €1.5 million which has been raised since the first game was played in 2011.
People can still contribute to this year’s fund by logging on to www.idonate.ie and searching for hurlingforcancerresearch.
