A large crowd gathered in Kilkenny’s Peace Park on Sunday for a solemn ceremony to commemorate ANZAC Day.
Citizens of Australia and New Zealand who live in the South-East of Ireland have a strong tradition of remembrance of their countrymen and women who served in the ANZAC Forces on ANZAC Day, which is commemorated annually in their homelands.
A large number of Irish men joined up when they had emigrated from Ireland during World War I. Many died from the counties of the South-East of Ireland, including Kilkenny. For the last number of years a regional ceremony has taken place in Kilkenny to allow them to be remembered by all who wish to do so.
The fitting location was the Kilkenny Great War memorial in the Peace Park, Kilkenny. The ceremony consisted of poetry, prayer, music, national flag raising, wreath laying, Last Post and Reveille as well as the respective national anthems.
Representatives from the Australian, New Zealand and Turkish Embassies spoke at the event, after which refreshments were served.
