The Public Accounts Committee celebrated its 100th anniversary this week as Leas-Cheann Comhairle, John McGuinness TD called on the Government to expand the role of the Committee and the Controller and Auditor General to include the examination of RTÉ, local government and Section 39 funding and other bodies in receipt of public funds.

“Transparency and accountability must continue to be the central role of the Public Accounts Committee across the full range of departments and agencies that benefit from public funds,” said Deputy McGuinness.
“As we plan for the next 100 years, we must set a firm foundation based on the best practice of the past, coupled with radical reform of how the public accounts and the controller and Auditor General operates in order to respond to a world that is changing rapidly, advancing at a pace in the use of IT and artificial intelligence if we are serious about protecting the exchequer and the public funds,” he concluded.
