Tributes to Kilkenny woman who gave five decades of service as a sacristan

Kathleen Dunphy (RIP)

The death recently occurred of Kathleen Dunphy, Connolly Street, Kilkenny City.

Born in 1938, Kathleen became sacristan in St Canice’s at the age of 20, succeeding her aunt Molly. She served the role for 50 years until her retirement.

In 2008, Kathleen received the Bene Merenti medal from Pope Benedict XVI at a special ceremony at St Canice’s Well with Bishop Seamus Freeman.

Down through the years she faithfully rang the bell at noon and six for the Angelus and looked after countless clergy in her time.

Sympathy went to her family, Billy, Trish, Therese, Jim, Richard, Kathleen. John and extended family.
