Sadness spread across the parish of Callan at news of the passing of Hazel Hennessy, a gentle little lady who truly embodied kindness to her very fingertips. Hazel was known for her warm greetings, while the comfort she brought to those around her was felt by all who knew her.
Having spent her life in Collins Park, Hazel moved to Mount Carmel Residential Home less than two years ago. Despite her short time there, she became an integral part of the community.
"Hazel wasn’t even two years with us in Mount Carmel but it felt like she had always been there," said Frank McKenna, Director of Mount Carmel, in a tribute.

"She was living her best life with us and she was heart and soul in most of our activities. Her loss will be felt for some time to come, not just in our Care Home but in the general Callan area."
A photograph taken by the Droichead Resource Centre commemorated Hazel’s many years of volunteering, just one example of her lifelong dedication to helping others. Hazel’s absence will be strongly felt at Callan Parish Bingo and at the Saturday evening Mass in Callan Parish Church, where she was a familiar and welcoming presence.
Many heartfelt tributes have been paid to Hazel, reflecting just how dearly she was loved. John Lennon from Kilbride and Green Street said, "Hazel was a part of Callan that a lot of people strive to be. She quietly and willingly gave herself to everything Callan.
"From the pitch and putt, working in Jerry Walsh’s for years. She was part of the town’s fabric, her involvement in scouts, church and selling the news sheet. Her whistled tunes as she walked or cycled around the town, a town that she was so proud of. She will be solely missed by friends and family. But she will not be forgotten," she added.
Maria Dollard also paid tribute: "Hazel was such a huge part of the community in Callan. She carved out a life full of volunteering and service to others that means she will be missed by so many people, not least her family. May she rest in peace."
Mary Dunne’s words were simple but heartfelt: "Hazel was so kind when I worked in Droichead; she was always willing to lend a helping hand. We had some great chats. A really lovely person. Rest in peace Hazel."
She is survived by her brothers Pat, Noel and Joe, family and many friends, all of whom will miss her dearly. Hazel’s spirit of warmth, service and kindness will not be forgotten.
