Moneenroe and Castlecomer have lost one of its greatest characters with the death of Maggie Walker (nee Geoghegan), Deerpark. Her sudden passing at her home has come as a great shock to her family and the wider community.
She met and married the love of her life Seamus Walker, and they moved to England for a period before returning home to Deerpark. Maggie worked in the Mills in the early days before taking on the role of homemaker to rear her three girls. For wit, there was simply none better whether on or off the stage. Versatile and talented, she was a regular with Deenside Players taking on numerous roles in Pantomimes over several years.
Always good for a laugh how she enjoyed the singing pubs scene with Mansfield’s of the Old Road, Moneenroe, just a stone’s throw from her birthplace. Maggie lived life to the full and was a dab hand at the knitting and enjoyed many a holiday especially to places where there was sunshine.

She was a loyal member of Castlecomer Parish Choir singing every Sunday at last Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception under the baton of Sr. Francis Xavier. Always on the go in her twilight years she was a regular at the Ceilí classes in Behan’s, Tolerton. Current and former members of Deenside Players fittingly formed a guard of honour and to accompany Maggie on her final journey to the cemetery. In a poignant touch the guard of honour paused at the Community Hall where Maggie received a spontaneous round of applause. The final curtain has come down on a terrific acting career, she leaves a legacy of lasting memories.
She was laid to rest in Crosshill Cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception by Fr. Richard Scriven P.P. Castlecomer assisted by Fr. Tom Corcoran P.P. Clogh and Fr. Ian Doyle, Associate Priest Castlecomer.
