The late John Kerry Keane was owner and editor of the Kilkenny People for four decades
The well-known Irish businessman John Kerry Keane has died, peacefully after a long illness.
For 40 years, he was the proprietor, publisher and editor of the Kilkenny People - a role he took on in the early 1960s when he was in his early 20s. Throughout his career as editor and publisher, John Kerry played an important role in the combined affairs of the Provincial Newspapers Association and the Irish Master Printers Association, later helping set up the Regional Newspapers Advertising Network.
In 1990, he spearheaded one of the most ambitious initiatives ever mounted by a provincial newspaper publisher and printer, with the purchase of the Freshford-based Wellbrook Press and the consolidation of its printing operations with his own at Purcellsinch. The Kilkenny People group later expanded its stable of newspapers, acquiring the Clonmel Nationalist and the Tipperary Star; the three titles and print plant were sold in 2000. He explored and maintained numerous other business interests and community involvements in the years that followed.
