THE LEINSTER senior cup Plate rugby final finished in a draw. Kilkenny College and Gonzaga College shared the honours and they will host the trophy for six months each.
Kilkenny had trailed for almost the entire game. It looked like they had won the Plate when Foster Horan brilliantly finished off a move involving Tom Bulfin and Ross Bailey-Kearney with five minutes to go.
In the closing minute of injury-time Gonzaga’s Barry Daly took the ball behind his own try line and in a solo effort managed to score a magnificent try. The resulting conversion saw the two teams tied 33-33 at the final whistle.
Kilkenny College senior coach, Jeff Carter said that with all the effort that both teams had put in and the quality of rugby meant it hadn’t been a day for losing.
“The match was so good and the quality of rugby was so high that it wasn’t a day for either side to lose. Myself and Billy Byrne (Gonzaga coach) wanted to finish on a high note and to give both teams a sense of achievement. We met in the middle of the pitch and called it a share. I thank everyone appreciated that,” he said.
The two schools will now have trophy on display for six months each while they prepare for next year’s Senior Cup.
