More buses needed to 'ensure safe access to schools' in Kilkenny and combat climate change

More school buses needed in Kilkenny to improve safety for students and reduce emissions

Councillor Tomás Breathnach has put forward a motion to write to government departments urging them to give full recognition to the role of school transport in combatting climate change and facilitating safe access to schools.

"I was talking to a school principal recently who raised how cars were parking in front of their school when dropping pupils off and the potential hazards being created," he said.

"Increased funding in shared transport and the adequate provision of it can both reduce the numbers of motor vehicles on our roads and improve safety outside schools during drop-off and collection hours," he added.

"It also can serve as a measure to combat climate change and is currently underestimated as one of most practical measures to do so."

Cllr Breathnach's motion to write to government was seconded by Cllr Michael McCarthy and letters will now be written to the Department of Education, Department of Environment, Climate & Communications and the Department of Transport.
