Kilkenny school set to participate in Junk Kouture final for second year in a row
Kilkenny City Vocational School are participating for the second year in the Junk Kouture final.
Junk Kouture is open to 12-19-year-olds in secondary education. Students are challenged to create a fashion couture outfit from 100% recycled materials and bring it to life on a global stage.
Junk Kouture is the worlds largest youth sustainable fashion competition with a vision to enrich and empower the lives of young people through creativity and sustainability.
Art teacher Alisha May said: "This year for the second year in a row since introducing the TY module, we are delighted to say that our art department are Junk Kouture city finalists.
"This is a national and worldwide competition that focuses on sustainability and student creativity.

"We are extremely excited this year as our student team are returning to Ireland take part. Usually, the finals of the competition take place in May however due to unforeseen circumstances it was postponed to October 1.
"This was slightly disappointing news at first to us as our student group who were chosen as finalists were international exchange students who returned to Spain in June. This meant they would not be able to take part physically in the competition.

"With the persistence of their art teacher, Ms May (head of art at KCVS) a solution was worked out with Junk Kouture to organise getting our students back to Ireland to participate and showcase their design.
"We are thrilled to be able to welcome back our students to participate and showcase their design as they are the only finalists from Kilkenny City. We can’t wait to see Achera Lilth-Heim perform! A big thank you to Junk Kouture for helping financially return our students to take part!

"The design is inspired by canary island drag queen culture, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and has combined materials of plastic bottles, paper, broken jewellery , pvc piping and discarded feathers."
The final will be held on October 1 at 6:30pm in The RDS Dublin.
