The board of management at Castlecomer Community School have submitted a planning application for a significant new extension aimed at expanding the school facilities.

The planned development includes a new two-storey standalone school accommodation block that will provide an additional space for both student learning and staff support.

The extension is planned to feature a variety of new classrooms and specialised teaching spaces.

These include three general classrooms, a home economics room, two design and communication graphics rooms, an art room, a textiles room, and a science laboratory with an associated prep room.

Additionally, two staff offices, WC facilities, a locker area, storage and service rooms, and other ancillary support accommodations are part of the plans.

The envisioned project will also involve several associated works, including a reconfiguration of the existing car park, installation of new front gates, and repositioning of the front wall closer to the roadway.

Other notable developments include new site lighting, landscaping, paving, and roadway adjustments.

A new car park area will be created, if plans are approved, along with associated roadworks, drainage, and lighting.

A boundary fence will be installed on the eastern side of the school site, and a relocated water storage tank is planned. The proposal also includes a new LPG tank and an electrical sub-station.

A 20-space bike shelter is also planned as well as comprehensive landscaping for newly developed areas.

The application was received by Kilkenny County Council on October 31, 2024.

A decision will be due, subject to further information not being required, by January 3, 2025.
