Kilkenny schools scooped three awards at this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, which took place last week at the RDS in Dublin.
Kilkenny College and CBS Secondary School picked up a highly commended award each, while Colaiste Pobail Osraí won highly commended as well as a special award.
Colaiste Pobail students Muireann Greene, Annabel Campion, and Faye De Breit caught judges’ eyes with their project ‘Red Alert – Creating a deterrent to drivers breaking red lights’, winning the Road Safety Authority Award.
Alan Meinderink and Danny Beirne-Bowden from Kilkenny College picked up a Technology award for their project 'Affordable Prosthetic Arm’, while CBS students Jaysen John and Alfie Byrne made an impact in the Social & Behavioural Sciences category with their project ‘Hidden in Plain Sight: Exploring the Blind Spots of Attention in Young Adolescents’.
“Our Young Scientists having a wonderful time at the exhibition with their project on affordable red light cameras,” said Coláiste Pobail Osraí.
“A very busy few days for our Young Scientists as they met with politicians, Gardaí, radio and print media, judges and interested members of the public. Maith iad triúr, agus a múinteoirí Elaine agus Julia fosta!”
Students from CBS Secondary School Kilkenny visited ABP’s stand at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition at the RDS in Dublin. ABP staff were on hand to discuss some of the benefits of beef and potential careers in the meat production sector with visitors. Attendees learned about some of the health benefits of eating beef.
This year ABP sponsored the Sustainable Farming Practices category at the exhibition. The company has extensive experience with research in Irish agriculture including its demonstration farm in Carlow, which aims to help beef farmers reduce their carbon emissions.
Minister for Education Norma Foley paid tribute to all students who exhibited their work.
“The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition plays a key role in promoting our young people’s interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). I am committed to continuing to encourage STEM in our schools for the benefit of all learners.’’
