Five schools in Kilkenny are to be funded for additional special needs classes sanctioned by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) for the 2025/2026 school year.
Scoil Bhride (Paulstown), Glenmore National School, Listerlin Mixed National School, Scoil Mhuire NS (Mooncoin), and Gaelscoil Osrai are all set to benefit under the programme.
Minister of State Jennifer Murnane O’Connor has warmly welcomed the announcement of the new special classes, which also include Newtown National School, Dunleckney National School, and Myshall National School in Carlow. The investment, supported by Budget 2025, will provide up to 300 special school places and 400 special classes nationwide, accommodating over 2,700 students.
“This funding is a game-changer for special education in Carlow-Kilkenny,” said Minister of State Murnane O’Connor.
“Schools like Newtown, Dunleckney, Myshall, Scoil Bhride, Glenmore, Listerlin, Scoil Mhuire, and Gaelscoil Osrai will now have the resources to provide tailored support for students with special educational needs. This is a testament to the government’s commitment to inclusive education and ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
The new special classes will cater to a range of needs, including autism, physical disabilities, and sensory impairments, ensuring that students receive the support they need within their local communities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the growing demand for special education places and to create a more inclusive and equitable education system.
Minister John Moynihan, who provided details of the sanctioned classes, emphasised the importance of forward planning in special education provision.
“Intensive engagement is ongoing to ensure that every child who needs a place in a special class or school will have one,” he said.
“We are committed to sanctioning the remainder of classes shortly and will continue to work closely with the NCSE, schools, and parents to make this a reality.”
Minister Murnane O’Connor added: “This announcement is a significant step forward for families and schools in Carlow-Kilkenny. I am particularly proud to see our local schools benefiting from this funding, as it reflects our commitment to supporting both urban and rural communities. Together, we are building a brighter future for all our children.”
