After spending more than thirty years in the multinational technology sector, a Kilkenny man decided to return to education and subsequently worked his way all the way up to a PhD.

Gerard O'Keeffe first completed a BA in Local Studies with first class honours in 2016, studying part-time through the Maynooth University outreach campus, then sited on the grounds of St Kieran's College.

He was subsequently awarded a Maynooth University Alumni Scholarship and completed an MA in Military History and Strategic Studies, also with first class honours, in 2017.

Gerard was next awarded a John and Pat Hume PhD Scholarship, again from Maynooth University, in 2017 and, aged 63, has fulfilled a life goal by graduating with a PhD in History, on September 6, 2022.
