Two city schools are set to become one in the next fortnight, with the Department of Education ready to sign off on a long-sought amalgamation.
Local TD John McGuinness says approval is to be granted to amalgamate St John’s Junior and Senior Schools, and they will formally come together on May 15 following a long campaign.
“We have campaigned at length to deliver this result and so I’m delighted today to confirm that it will now happen and the date has been set,” he said.
“The new amalgamated school will be known as St John’s National School. The school will operate from the existing school sites until the build of accommodation is complete. An offer of additional accommodation will also follow shortly.
“This is very positive news for Kilkenny, particularly the St John's Parish, and I’m delighted the result that was campaigned for is now the result that will be delivered,” said Deputy McGuinness.
“Both schools can now progress with their plans and I look forward to the finished result which will mean better facilities for our children and more school places in the Eastern Environs.”
