PICTURES: Kilkenny school ransacked and windows smashed following shocking acts

Gardaí are investigating the events which has left many in Castlecomer horrified

Gardaí are investigating all possible avenues after The Boy’s National School in Castlecomer was trashed on Monday night.

Pictures taken by Farrell's Gala and published online show windows smashed and classrooms ransacked (SEE PICTURES BELOW).

The school officially opened in 1941 but is no longer in operation following the merger of the girls and boys schools into a co-educational school in the autumn of 2025.

Last year, Castlecomer Presentation Primary School and Castlecomer Boys School jointly requested the outgoing Bishop Niall Coll, patron of both schools, to sanction the process of amalgamation of the two schools. This request followed consultation with the stakeholders – boards of management, teachers, pupils, and parents.

Bishop Coll granted this request, as did the Department of Education and approved Scoil Íosagáin as the new name.

"It’s has saddened us to see what happened last night," Farrell's Gala posted on social media in response to this week's events.

"A school where Great Grandparents, Grandparents, parents, uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons and possibly even great grandsons were educated. A school that holds so many memories for everyone. It really is awful behaviour and so disrespectful."
