Former Republic of Ireland defender and assistant manager Chris Hughton has been named Ghana's new head coach.

The ex-Brighton and Nottingham Forest boss, who was part of Ghana's backroom team for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was given a technical advisor role with the African nation last year and had a helping hand in Ghana's qualification for the major tournament.

Hughton, whose father is from Ghana, won 53 caps for the Boys in Green and was part of the Irish squad in Euro '88 and Italia '90 before he retired from football in 1993.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man was the first mixed-race player to represent the country.

A statement on the Ghana Football Association’s website read: "The Ghana Football Association has the pleasure to appoint Chris Hughton as Head Coach of the Black Stars following extensive deliberations between the two parties.

"The appointment is in line with the vision of the GFA to continue with the project of building a formidable squad that started with Otto Addo in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament.

"The GFA has also decided to maintain assistant coaches George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani. The three coaches were part of the technical team for the World Cup in Qatar."
