RIP: Kilkenny soccer community raise huge sum in memory of former player and official

The late Shane Murphy

A GoFund Me Page has been set up in memory of a deeply loved local man who was a central and well-known figure in the Kilkenny soccer community.

So far, at the time of writing (January 9), an impressive €4,490 has been raised with the page still open to donations.

Shane Murphy, who had been serving as the chairman of River Rangers AFC, took ill after participating in a charity soccer match last August and subsequently passed away.

Heartfelt tributes were paid to the Murphy family across the Kilkenny & District League and further afield following his untimely passing, with footballing rivalry put to one side as clubs and the wider community united in grief.

In Shane's memory, this fundraiser is raising money in aid of 'Cardiac Risk In The Young In Ireland', Cois Nore Kilkenny and the Carlow-Kilkenny Homecare Team with every donation greatly appreciated by the organisers.

"This fundraising page is in tribute to Shane Murphy. Shane was taken from us all too young while playing the game he loved," a post to the Go-Fund Me Page read.

"Shane was one of the greatest club servants on and off the field for River Rangers AFC," the post added.
