Fort Rangers had a memorable victory in the McCalmont Cup, beating Evergreen A at home on Sunday morning in a match that ebbed and flowed for the 90 minutes plus 20 minutes of extra-time.

Meanwhile, in a dramatic Sunday of cup football, Freebooters also bowed out of the competition, losing away to Castlewarren Celtic 3-2. - READ: KDL WRAP-UP HERE

"Any time they're gone other teams start saying 'hey, we have a chance here and that's what the cup is all about, upsets," manager Jim Nugent told the Kilkenny People Sport Podcast.

Evergreen took an early lead which was cancelled out by a fine Eddie Nugent finish which left the teams level at half-time.

The league champions regained the lead midway through the second half, but a superb headed equaliser from Chris Phelan sent the game to extra time.

There was no separating the sides in extra-time, resulting in a penalty shootout. Fort goalkeeper Craig Cummins was the hero. He saved four penalties to put the locals through 3-1 on spot kicks to the last 16, where they will meet Southend United away.
