Thomastown triumph! League joy for United on last day of season

It could have been Evergreen’s day but for Thomastown, nothing but a win would suffice

Thomastown United Ladies in action against Evergreen

A sun-drenched Kells Road was the location for the most anticipated game of the Women’s Kilkenny & District League - not only was there three points up for grabs but it was a winner takes all league decider.
A win or draw and it was going to be Evergreen's day, and nothing but a win would suffice for Thomastown
After a massive Leinster Shield Win last week over Baldoyle it was Thomastown who started the brighter, a lot of great play down the wings with Katie Grace and Hannah Persse had the Evergreen defence tied in knots. It took just four mins for Thomastown to find the opening goal when Katie Grace spotted the Evergreen Keeper off her line and lobbed her from the edge of the box, a perfect start for the town but this just spurred Evergreen on they found the equaliser from a header from a corner kick.
Thomastown settled down again and played some fantastic passes through the midfield duo of Eva Hynes and Sarah Hudson and backed up by Sinead Whelan and Ailish O’Shea. It took until the 31st minute when Sinead Whelan put her name on the scoresheet with an excellent taken goal. Thomastown ladies back on top, could this be their day?
Half time came at the right time, as the heat began to start taking control and players needed fluids on board quickly.
Second half started and it was back to Evergreen pushing for the equaliser but the back four of Niamh Ryan, Captain Shauna Coady, Áine Lannon and Maeve Keneally who kept them out with some fantastic defending. Just 11 minutes on the clock in the second half the ball made its way out to the right hand side of the pitch and an on running Ailish O’Shea took control, bet the defender and unleashed an unstoppable shot over the keeper and into the goal, Thomastown now with one hand on the trophy while the score is at 3-1 but there was still time left for Evergreen to get back into the game.
A quick substitute made to bring Sophie McCabe on for Niamh Ryan who ran herself into the ground and had an unbelievable game. Sophie got herself straight into the game and held her own on the right wing. It was always going to be nervous going into the final stages of the game but Thomastown's keeper Ellie Moran was the rock at the back and kept everyone on their toes and was there when needed over the whole game.
A special mention has to go to the full squad over the whole season who made a difference when needed, Kristen Hanney, Chantelle Wemyss, Megan O'Reilly. Caoimhe Garry, Blaithnaid Mullins, Bri O'Donoghue and Lily Peig Maher.
Eventually the final whistle came and the Thomastown Ladies held on to become the Kilkenny & District League Champions for 2024/25 after a fantastic season where the went unbeaten in the League and claimed the Leinster FA Junior Shield. Massive Congrats to Caroline, Aine and Willie.
